W 95-62

Dordt College JV Men's Basketball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

January 13, 2011

(Sioux Center, Iowa) There is really just one word to describe Dordt's play in the first half Thursday night---dominant. An explosive first 20 minutes propelled the Defenders to a 95-62 victory against Dakota Wesleyan, upping their record to 7-6.

The Tigers and Defenders were tied at 5 in the opening minutes, but then Dordt exploded. Outscoring Wesleyan 51-12 the remainder of the half, the Defenders used an unstoppable inside game to take command of the contest, while the Tigers struggled to take care of the ball or establish solid possessions on offense.

James Rylaarsdam and Lee Veldkamp threw in 10 points apiece in the first half for Dordt. Also contributing in the onslaught were guards Taylor Thompson and Matt Vande Kamp, who scored 9 and 8 respectively.

A 56-17 halftime lead ensured that the outcome was never in question, but Dakota Wesleyan gave Dordt all they could handle in the 2nd half. A rejuvenated Tiger team found their offensive rhythm and actually outscored the Defenders in the 2nd stanza. Zach Anderson scored all 16 of his points in the 2nd half, and Tracy Hofer finished the game with 12 for the Tigers, who lost their 6th in a row.

Dordt had 5 scorers in double-digits Thursday: Rylaarsdam, 19, Veldkamp, 13, Thompson, 12, Vande Kamp, 11, and Nick Wilson, 10. Coach Van Wyk's squad is now riding a 4-game win streak. They take on the Morningside Mustangs this coming Monday from De Witt Gymnasium.
