(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders needed late game heroics from Luke Ruter to hold for a 73-71 win over the visiting Briar Cliff Chargers. The win was Dordt's 20th of the season and locked up at least fourth place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference race.

The Defenders and Chargers played a free-flowing brand of basketball for the first ten minutes of the contest with Dordt trailing 24-22 at the ten minute mark. Briar Cliff had led by as many as seven at 24-17 on a three-pointer by Kurt Webb.

Dordt fought back to tie it at 31-31 with 4:31 remining on an Eric Van Maanen lay-up but Briar Cliff answered back with a Jeremy Moses three pointer. Back came the Defenders, tying the game at 34, 36 and 37 before Dordt got four straight free throws, two by Derek Keizer and two from Scott Van Zanten with under :20 remaining to make it 41-37 at halftime.

Dordt almost immediately pushed the lead to nine on a jump shot by Jim Brinks with 16:49 left and the would stay between four and ten points for Dordt College. Dordt threatened to blow the game open with 6:55 left when Josh Boyer hit his second three-pointer of the day to making it 69-58.

Dordt would score just four points the rest of the game. The Defenders led 71-62 with 3:41 remaining on a jumper by Luke Ruter but the Chargers wouldn't fade. A Joe Nelson free-throw line jumper made it 71-64 and a Neil Rohe three-pointer pushed the Chargers back to withing 71-67 with 2:53 left. Rohe hit two free throws with 1:35 left to make it 71-69 and a lay-up by Ian Banks after a steal tied it with 1:09 to go. Banks missed the free throw that would have given Briar Cliff their only lead of the second half on the three-point play opportunity.

Dordt succesfully ran the clock down on their next possession but missed the shot. The ball went out of bounds last touched by Briar Cliff and Dordt had it with :35 left. Dordt ran it down again and Ruter took a three-pointer that was blocked. Jim Brinks and BJ Haan kept the ball alive and Ruter ended up with it in the middle of the lane and converted the game winner with less than a second remaining with a left-handed finger roll.

Ruter led Dordt with 23 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Haan had ten points on 5-5 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds while Derek Keizer had ten points and five assists. Jim Brinks and Mark Rowenhorst each had eight and Josh Boyer six.

Briar Cliff was paced by Joe Nelson with 23 points and Jeremy Moses added 14.

Dordt outrebounded Briar Cliff 33-29.

The win marks the second time the Defenders have won 20 games in a season with the last time coming in the 1987-1988 season.
