Michelle Steiger claimed the individual title at the women's Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, November 6 in Yankton, South Dakota. Steiger raced to a final time of 18:12 on the 5,000 meter course to defeat her nearest competitor Charity Miles of Northwestern by 12 seconds. It's the second time in three years Dordt has had the individual winner with Jen Kempers claiming the prize in 2008.

Spearheaded by Steiger's finish, the Defenders placed fifth out of 12 teams in the final event for most teams. Nebraska Wesleyan won the event with 38 points.

Dordt's Merissa Harkema claimed 15th in a time of 19:09 while Rachel Werkhoven and Jessica Moseman were 36th and 37th overall with times of 20:01 and 20:04. Gail Dirksen completed the Dordt scoring with a 40th place finish of 20:10 while Anna Jefferson and Becca Van Dam were the pushers for Dordt in 52nd and 57th respectively in times of 20:32 and 20:39. 103 women ran in the race.

The Defender men claimed fourth in the standings with 134 points with Nebraska Wesleyan taking the team prize on the men's side as well with 48 points. Concordia's Dana Schmidt was first across the line in the 8,000 meter race with a time of 25:51.

Dordt's first runner was Stephan McNamara with a time of 26:43 for 18th and Nathan Brace was second for Dordt in 26:55 for 23rd. Ryan Tholen wasn't far behind in 27:14 for 29th place while Tim Bierma crossed in 32nd with a time of 27:19. Josiah Luttjeboer was 39th in 27:42 while Eric Tudor was a pusher in a 41st time of 27:53. Chris Postma also factored in with a time of 28:14 for 48th place.

Three of Dordt's top seven were freshman and with Luttjeboer the lone senior in the group. 105 runners ran in the men's race.

Steiger earns an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships on Saturday, November 20 while Harkema must wait for the at-large team announcements.
