 ![]() **Luke Hawley** serves as professor of English and dean for the arts and humanities at Dordt University, providing leadership and support for the following departments:

- Art and Design
- Communication
- English
- History
- Language Studies
- Music
- Philosophy
- Theatre Arts
- Theology

Passionate about how a deeper understanding of God’s sovereignty shapes everyday life, Hawley explores these ideas in his teaching of topics such as fiction, songwriting, and screenwriting.

Hawley is the author of [*The Northwoods Hymnal*](https://www.amazon.com/Northwoods-Hymnal-Luke-Hawley/dp/0983553041) (2013), which received the Nebraska Book Award. His songwriting has also been recognized through honors such as selection for the 2013 Johnny Mercer Songwriter Project, and accolades from the Colorado Folk Festival Songwriting Contest—earning Honorable Mentions in 2016, 2018, and 2022, as well as being named First Alternate in 2019.

Hawley, as a “constant tinkerer,” embraces creative work as a way to reflect God’s image and offer Him praise—whether that’s making music with bandmates in [The Ruralists](https://www.fullyruralized.com/), writing for the [In All Things](https://www.dordt.edu/in-all-things) blog, building tube amplifiers, or fixing up old houses.
