Dordt University announces two newly named athletic spaces
Dordt University's gymnasium is now called the Vos Family Gymnasium, and the competition floor is now named Coaches Court.
“Our responsibility is to steward well what God has entrusted to us. These projects help us continue carrying out Dordt’s mission while serving students well for years to come.”
As students return to Dordt University for the beginning of a new academic year, several campus improvement projects are nearing completion following a busy summer of construction and renovation.
A new video offers a look at the progress made across campus. The work reflects Dordt’s continued response to enrollment growth as well as its commitment to maintaining and improving the spaces students use each day.
“Continued enrollment growth means we have some catching up to do, and several projects have come together at the same time,” says Fred Verwoerd, vice president for university operations.
Among the most visible changes are the Grove and the Quad, two outdoor spaces designed to encourage students to spend time together.
Located between West Hall, North Hall, and East Hall, the Grove includes basketball and pickleball courts, fire pits, hammocking areas, seating, and open green space. The area provides underclassmen with an outdoor extension of their residence halls while also inviting students from across campus to gather, study, play games, or simply spend time outside.
The Quad, located among Kuyper Apartments, Southview Apartments, and the Squares Apartments, serves a similar purpose for upperclassmen. A pergola, fire pit, hammocking area, landscaping, and open lawn help connect the surrounding residences and create a shared neighborhood space.
“Students gravitate outdoors when the weather is nice,” says Robert Taylor, vice president for student success and dean of students. “These spaces give them opportunities to gather while still leaving room for whatever community develops organically.”
Other summer projects have focused on practical campus needs. Additional parking is being developed to offset spaces displaced by construction, including work on Dordt’s new 220-bed residence hall. The parking changes also support a broader effort to shift vehicle traffic away from central gathering areas and create a more connected, pedestrian-friendly campus.
Inside North Hall and East Hall, renovations to the first-floor community bathrooms are also nearing completion. The updates modernize spaces that have served generations of students while helping the residence halls continue to meet current expectations for campus living. Renovations to the upper floors are anticipated in future phases.
Together, the projects represent an investment not only in Dordt’s physical campus but also in the residential community those spaces support.
“Our responsibility is to steward well what God has entrusted to us,” says Verwoerd. “These projects help us continue carrying out Dordt’s mission while serving students well for years to come.”
