Dordt University's Mike Byker has been named the GPAC Sports Information Director of the Year, recognizing more than two decades of leadership in athletic communications.
Mike Byker, director of athletic communications at Dordt University, has been named the GPAC Sports Information Director (SID) of the Year, recognizing more than two decades of leadership in athletic communications and his contributions to student-athletes, coaches, and the broader community.
As the GPAC Sports Information Director of the Year, Byker will serve as the GPAC nominee for the NAIA Sports Information Director of the Year award.
For many years, Byker has served as the voice of Defender Athletics while helping shape the way Dordt tells the stories of its student-athletes and teams. During his tenure, he has overseen the growth of the Dordt Media Network, expanded the university's digital and social media presence, and built an athletic communications team dedicated to serving the university and its constituents with excellence.
"Mike's voice is synonymous with Dordt athletics, but his voice isn't Mike's greatest contribution," says Dordt University President Dr. Erik Hoekstra. "It's his heart—for students, coaches, fans, and Dordt's mission. Mike has assembled a team to lead Dordt's athletic communications with excellence and an ability to help our constituents know 'the story behind the story.' His leadership is a critical part of the athletic success that Dordt has experienced in recent years, and this recognition is certainly well earned."
Byker's impact extends well beyond campus, according to GPAC Commissioner Corey Westra, who has worked alongside Byker for years.
"Mike is just steady. He's a true professional," Westra says. "He always does everything with a servant's heart and just gets the job done."
Westra noted that the role of sports information director has changed dramatically over the past two decades as technology and audience expectations have shifted.
"The job has changed a ton," Westra says. "Mike and his team have had to stay ahead of that, and they take it on as an opportunity, not a threat. They've changed with the times, especially with the Dordt Media Network. It's been incredible to watch what they've done with their website and social media and the amount of information they provide."
He added that Byker's reputation among his colleagues is equally noteworthy.
"He's very well-respected by his peers," Westra says. "He's the dean of the GPAC SIDs. People call Mike for answers and good counsel. He's not in it for the honors. I know that he's very humble."
Dordt Director of Athletics Darin Keizer says Byker's influence has helped shape the culture of Defender Athletics.
"Mike has been a constant in the athletic department for over 20 years," Keizer says. "He built the Dordt Media Network, a team that covers all Dordt athletic events, but most importantly, he cares about our coaches and athletes."
Keizer describes Byker as "a legacy leader" who connects naturally with students, coaches, alumni, and community members.
"He is highly respected among his peers, talented in his craft, and very deserving of an award like this," Keizer says. "I would go beyond just calling him a good sports information director. He is a transformational leader who cares deeply about our coaches and athletes beyond the game."
For Westra, the recognition is fitting for someone whose work has long shaped the Defender experience.
"Dordt is very fortunate to have him," Westra says. "He's the voice of the Defenders and always will be."
