# Foreign Service Officer to give talk on “Immigration from the Inside”

 ![]()On Thursday, April 13 at 7 p.m., Foreign Service Officer Ian Kitterman will give a talk entitled “Immigration from the Inside,” which will be held at the Eckardt Lounge in the Campus Center. The event is open to the public.

Kitterman is a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State who has served in several U.S. consulates abroad, and now he’s helping write immigration policy in DC. Come hear his thoughts on our immigration system, how it can be navigated, and how it might be reformed. All views expressed are his own and not necessarily those of the U.S. government.

The immigration system could use improvement, says Criminal Justice and Business Professor Donald Roth, but there is deep partisan division as to how.

“When we hear from the people who work within the immigration system, we quickly learn that simple narratives break down, and the real work of reform is revealed against a backdrop of best-laid plans, inconsistencies, and unintended consequences. If we want to advocate for changing a system, we must start by gaining a deeper understanding of how it operates,” Roth adds.
