He earned an associate degree in welding from Northwest Iowa Community College as well as a bachelor’s degree from Dordt University. In addition to his academic background, Reitsma brings extensive experience as a research and design engineer, CNC programmer and operator, and production welder to Dordt’s engineering department. “The Lord has blessed me with a curiosity of how the world around me works and a desire and ability to ‘see’ solutions to the problems that are before me,” Reitsma says. “Years ago, as a student, I was looking for a two-year trade program rooted in Christian values,” Reitsma explains. Being able to serve and shape students looking for the same experience prompted Reitsma to consider this role at Dordt. Reitsma is grateful for the ways his God-given skills and experiences have shaped his career so far. Now, he looks forward to bringing both his expertise and a collaborative spirit to his new role, working alongside other faculty to serve students in both traditional and cross-disciplinary technology programs such as [Agriculture Service Technology](https://www.dordt.edu/academics/programs/agriculture-ba/agriculture-service-technology-as) (AST). “I’ve been an adjunct at Dordt since 2019 as a welding instructor,” adds Reitsma. “I know the community, and I look forward to further teaching and mentoring the students.” ![](https://d3evso2dxyohou.cloudfront.net/generalUploads/reitsma.jpg?mode=fit&pos=center-center&w=57&h=65&c=a219d81c&v=e548c6de3d4b2a387b38d1f83e8fe02b3bcd9354493f08345458aafa3fe6d135) Dr. [Ethan Brue](https://www.dordt.edu/people/ethan-brue), professor of engineering and dean for technology and applied sciences at Dordt, is excited about how Reitsma’s expertise will enrich the engineering program. “He brings a wealth of manufacturing and machining experience to our program, giving engineering and engineering technology students a sense of the opportunities and challenges of serving as a Christian in manufacturing,” explains Brue. Reitsma’s appointment also aligns with Dordt’s efforts to expand hands-on learning. “We’re excited for our students to learn design for manufacturing in spatial and tactile ways will be deeply appreciated by many students across a variety of disciplines who learn by doing,” adds Brue.
