# Dordt to hold prescribed burn in the Dordt Prairie on April 29

Dordt will conduct a prescribed burn in the Dordt Prairie this afternoon, beginning shortly after 1 p.m. Crews aim to finish before the 4 p.m. high school soccer game. This controlled burn helps maintain the health of the prairie ecosystem. For safety, please avoid the burn area during the afternoon.

 ![]()Dordt University plans to conduct a prescribed burn in the Dordt Prairie later this afternoon, weather and conditions permitting. The burn is part of Dordt’s ongoing prairie management efforts and will take place on the east side of campus.

By clearing away accumulated plant material, these burns encourage new growth, control invasive species, and support native plant populations.

Ten students enrolled in the “Wildlife Ecology and Stewardship” class will assist with the burn under the supervision of Biology Professor Dr. Robert De Haan, who is coordinating the effort.

The burn will begin shortly after 1 p.m. and is scheduled to be completed before a high school soccer game at 4 p.m.

For safety, community members are asked to avoid the burn area this afternoon. College administration and local authorities are aware that the controlled burn will be taking place.
