Haan Auditorium on Friday, October 9. Selections from the program include "Three Windows" by Jeffrey Paul, Mozart’s C Minor Serenade K388, and Beethoven’s Octet in E-flat Major Op. 103. At 3 p.m., the performers will lead a masterclass (details to be determined). Since its formation in 1982, the Dakota Wind Quintet has been well-received throughout the state of South Dakota and the greater Midwest region, giving concerts and lecture demonstrations, as well as live performances on Minnesota and South Dakota public radio. Most of the Dakota Wind Quintet’s time as a chamber ensemble is spent in the community performing at concert halls, colleges, community centers, and public schools. They also serve as principal woodwind players of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO), enriching and enhancing the quality of orchestra music in this region. Members of the ensemble include William Cedeño Torres, Jeffrey Paul, John Tomkins, Christopher Hill, and Daniel Kitchens. Torres, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, was appointed principal flute in May 2016. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Paul has been the principal oboe of the SDSO since 2003. In addition to playing the oboe, he plays piano, English horn, saxophone, guitar, and bagpipes; he also composes experimental and traditional music. John Tomkins, principal bassoon since 2002, has participated in many music festivals across the nation. Tomkins also serves as the bassoon instructor at Augustana University and the University of Sioux Falls. Christopher Hill has been SDSO’s principal clarinetist since 1987. He has performed with a variety of bands and orchestras, conducted the Sioux Falls Municipal Band, and designed his own line of clarinet mouthpieces. Daniel Kitchens, a graduate of Texas Christian University and the Royal College of Music in London, serves as the principal horn. The 2019-20 season marks his fourth with SDSO. This event has an attendance cap of 200 people. Masks are required for all recital attendees and seating will be socially distanced.
