Men's Track and Field - Red Raider Open Preview

The Event...The Dordt University men's track and field team will continue its outdoor season with a mid-week meet hosted by Northwestern College, the Red Raider Open.

The two-day meet begins Wednesday, April 13 around 3:30pm with the javelin and will conclude Thursday, April 14 in the early evening.

Teams Competing...Nine teams are scheduled to compete this week, including five from the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Season Update...This is the third of six regular season competitions for the Defenders leading up to the GPAC Championships on May 6-7 in Crete, Neb.

The Defenders totaled 25 top five finishes at the Sioux City Relays last weekend.

Dordt athletes won five events (3 individual, 2 relays) and five entries qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships by meeting the auto or provisional mark.

Payton Mauldin won three events, taking first in the 800m and then anchored both the 4x200 and 4x400 to the title. The Defenders 4x400 met the provisional mark (other relay members include Cole Zevenbergen, Devin Bos and Peyton Miller) and relay members for the 4x200 include Zevenbergen, Miller and Luke Wagner. Miller earned a first place finish in the 400m hurdles on Friday. Eric Steiger and Nic Veldhorst finished 1-2 in the 3000m steeplechase and both runners met the auto mark. Ethan Summerhays and Joe Anderson round out the list of qualifiers as they met the 'B' mark in the 10K and 1500m, respectively.
