Women's Basketball Resumes Season Against Flames


The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team will host the College of Saint Mary Flames on Wednesday, December 1 at 6:00 at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa.

The College of Saint Mary is off to an 8-2 start this season and is 2-2 in league play with losses in the conference to Northwestern and Dakota Wesleyan in a pair of games played in Omaha.  The two losses came in succession after Kirk Walker’s team had won seven in a row to start the year.  A win over Hastings on November 23 stopped the losing skid at two.  

The Flames are outscoring teams 66.7-56.9 and convert 42.3 percent of their field goals while holding opponents to 32 percent success. The Flames outrebound teams 40-36.3 and have committed 21 turnovers per game while forcing 18.  

Alyssa Marsh Contreras averages 13 points per game with 3.6 rebounds and Honnah Leo is scoring 12.5 points per game with 4.1 rebounds. Madelyn Turner and Sidney Anderson score 8.4 and 7.4 points per game and Anderson tops the team with an 8.1 rebounds per game average. Clare Lewandowski is next on the team in rebounds with a 7.2 average and Marsh-Contreras is the leader in assists per game with three.  


Dordt is 6-3 this season and 1-2 in league play and those conference games are the last three games Dordt has played.  The Defenders have been idle since a November 23 loss to Briar Cliff.  

The Defenders are outscoring teams 70.9-67.3 and outrebound teams 39.1-36.3.  Dordt converts 38.6 percent of its field goals and allow 40.1 percent success.  

Ashtyn Veerbeek tosses in 17.3 points per game with 8.8 rebounds and she is making 51.3 percent of her field goal attempts. Bailey Beckman is scoring 10.1 points per game and has a team high 14 made three-point shots. Hayden Heimensen scores 9.7 points per game with 3.3 rebounds and Karly Gustafson is averaging 8.8 points with 8.3 rebounds. Mya Chmielewski is good for 8.3 points per game and makes 52 percent of her field goal tries.  


The Flames overcame a five point deficit at the end of the first quarter and led 37-36 over Hastings on the road last Tuesday night.  The Flames than nipped the Broncos with an 18-14 fourth quarter advantage on the way to a 75-72 win. Marsh-Contreras  had 17 points, six assists and five rebounds while Leo and Scott had 11 and 10 points each. Anderson grabbed ten rebounds and Leo six along with Lewandowski.  

Dordt lost a 62-56 decision to Briar Cliff last week and was outscored in the fourth quarter 13-7. Ashtyn Veerbeek scored 13 in limited time due to foul trouble and she had seven rebounds. Beckman and Chmielewski had 11 and 10 points each with Gustafson scoring eight with 13 rebounds.  


Dordt leads the series 14-6 and won both meetings last season as the Flames struggled to a 3-23 record. Dordt won the first meeting in Omaha on January 6, 2021 by a score of 83-59 after leading 39-34 at halftime. Gustafson scored 16 and Erika Feenstra 14 for the Defenders while the Flames got 13 from Leo and the Flames committed 25 turnovers and were 23-54 from the field.  

The teams met again on February 6 and Dordt was a 96-59 winner after racing to a 31-18 first quarter lead and the lead stretched to 51-26 at halftime. Feenstra had 31 and Gustafson 12 while Leo and Lewandowski had 13 and 12 respectively.
