Women's Basketball Hosts Nationally Rated Foe


The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team will host Concordia on Saturday, November 20 starting at 4:00. The game was originally scheduled for a 2:00 start but was moved to accommodate the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Match at 1:00.

The Bulldogs are 3-2 this season and has wins over Bellevue, Dakota State and Midland.  Losses this season for Concordia are to Sterling and Briar Cliff and are 1-1 in the GPAC. 

Concordia is outscoring teams 78.4-72.2 and outrebound teams 40.4-35.6. Concordia has forced 19 turnovers a game so far this season and have given the ball up 12.4 times per game. The Bulldogs have also attempted 112 free throws and opponents have tried the exact same number. 

Taysha Rushton averages a team high 20.2 poitns per game and Abby Heemstra is scoring 10.8 points per game with five rebounds. Sadie Powell and Rylee Pauli score 8.4 and 7.4 points per outing and Pauli leads the team with eight rebounds per contest.  


Dordt is 5-2 this season and 0-1 in the GPAC.  Dordt’s losses are to Grand View and Morningside and Dordt’s four game winning streak stopped with the loss to Morningside.  

Dordt outscores teams 73.3-69.1 and outrebound opponents 38.1-35.9.  The Defenders are making 39.6 percent of its shots and allow opponents 42.5 percent success.  

Ashtyn Veerbeek scores 17.6 points per game with 9.3 rebounds while Bailey Beckman is converting 11.1 points per game and Mya Chmielewski’s average is 9.1. Karly Gustafson is at 9.0 points per game with 5.9 rebounds and Hayden Heimensen adds 8.4 points per game.  


Concordia beat Midland on November 17 by a score of 93-52 after leading 54-28 at halftime. Rushton scored 17 and Sadie Powell came off the bench to score 15 and Kendal Brigham and Conrad had 14 points each. Conrad and Rushton both had four assists and Powell had a team high six rebounds.   Concordia made 33-66 field goals and had a 48-37 rebounding advantage.  

Dordt lost to Morningside 83-64 on Wednesday night with Beckman scoring 17 and Gustafson had eight points and six rebounds.  Dordt was led in rebounding by Veerbeek with 10 and Chmielewski handed out four assists.  


Concordia won both games in the series last season with a 73-62 win on November 21 and a 77-71 win on February 3. The first game was played in Seward with Beckman and Feenstra scoring 17 and 14 respectively while Concordia got 15 from Rushton.   

The second game was in Sioux Center and the teams were tied 62-62 at the start of the fourth quarter.  Taylor Cockerill converted for 26 points while Veerbeek scored 19 and had 19 rebounds with three blocked shots. Feenstra scored 15 and Gustafson added 12. 


Dordt will travel to face Briar Cliff on Tuesday, November 23 while Concordia is scheduled to host Jamestown that same night.
