Men's Cross Country Team Preps For Nationals

The Event... The Dordt University men's cross country team will run at the 2021 NAIA Championship this weekend at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Championship Course in Vancouver, Wash. Friday's 8K race will begin at 12:30pm (CST).

Championship Information:

The Championship Field...The 66th annual men's championship features 36 teams and 82 individual qualifiers from across the NAIA. 

  • 22 automatic qualifiers by winning the conference title (or runner-up finish if 12+ teams in conference)
  • 1 host bid (Bushnell)
  • 13 at-large bids

Dordt is the only team from the Great Plains Athletic Conference to earn a bid into this year's championship.

Four individuals from the conference will also be competing; Camden Sesna, Calvin Rhode (Concordia), Kalen Dockweiler (Doane), Ian Wiersema (Northwestern).

Championship History / Course Info... This is the seventh year the championship is held at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Course, most recently in 2019. Other years are: 2009-12 and 2017. 

The men's 8K course consists of four total loops.

Rankings...Dordt is ranked 13th in the final NAIA Coaches' poll, a spot they have occupied in every poll this season. 

Dordt Championship History...The 2021 season is the fourth straight and eighth overall appearance for the Defender men's program at the NAIA Championship. Dordt has sent individuals to the national meet 16x; in total, Defender runners have competed at 24 NAIA Cross Country Championships.

Dordt Notes / Line-Up...

The Defenders won four of its six meets this fall, taking first in the GPAC Preview, Defender Holiday Inn Express, Mount Marty and the GPAC Championship. They recorded a perfect score (15pts) in the last two meets, setting the record for the lowest team score at the conference championship (17pts, set by Doane in 1969). 

10 Defenders competed at the GPAC Championships on Nov.6; seven of those 10 will run in Friday's race.
