Women's Cross Country Team Set To Compete at Nationals

The Event... The Dordt University women's cross country team is set to compete at the 2021 NAIA Championship held this weekend at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Championship Course in Vancouver, Wash. Friday's 5K race will begin at 1:30pm (CST).

Championship Information:

The Championship Field...The 42nd annual women's championship features 36 teams and 88 individual qualifiers from across the NAIA. 

  • 20 automatic qualifiers by winning the conference title (or runner-up finish if 12+ teams in conference)
  • 1 host bid (Bushnell)
  • 15 at-large bids

Dordt is one of two teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference to qualify (along with Hastings). Dordt earned its bid by winning the GPAC Championship; Hastings also received an automatic bid with its runner-up finish.

Six individuals from the conference will also be competing; Emalee Fundermann, Kristine Honomichl and Jo McKibben (Morningside), Rylee Haecker (Concordia), Madison Muma (Doane) and Morgan Marker (Northwestern).

Championship History / Course Info... This is the seventh year the championship is held at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Course, most recently in 2019. Other years are: 2009-12 and 2017. 

The women's 5K course consists of three total loops; an abbreviated, short loop followed by two long loops.

Rankings...Dordt is ranked 14th in the final NAIA Coaches' poll, a spot they have occupied since Oct.7. 

Dordt Championship History...This is the 10th consecutive season and 13th overall appearance for the Defenders at the NAIA Championship. Dordt has sent individuals to compete at nationals nine additional seasons, for a total of 22 years the Defenders have been represented at the national championship.

Dordt Notes / Line-Up...

The Defenders have won three of their six meets this season, taking first at the GPAC Preview, Mount Marty and the GPAC Championship. They placed second at their home meet and posted a ninth place finish at the Augustana Twilight, a meet that featured several NCAA D-I and D-II squads.

10 Defenders competed at the GPAC Championships on Nov.6; seven of those 10 will run in Friday's race.
