Men's Basketball Opens Season In Chicago

Dordt will be playing two games this weekend in the Chicago, Illinois area in a pair of contests hosted by Governor’s State. Dordt faces William Penn (Iowa) on Friday at 5:00 and then will play either East-West or Governor’s State on Saturday. The games are played in true tournament fashion with the winners meeting at 3:00 on Saturday and the losers at 1:00. Governor’s State and East-West will play at 7:00 on Friday.
William Penn is playing in its season opener after posting a 25-2 overall record and an 18-1 conference record. The Statesmen made it to the NAIA National Championship final site last season before being eliminated in the round of 16.
Karmari Newman is back after averaging 15.4 points per game with 3.3 rebounds and Q Cager added 10.5 points per contest with 3.5 rebounds and he made 56.6 percent of his field goal attempts. Josh Watkins and Ahmad Pender scored 8.7 and 8.5 points each and Pender made 76 percent of his field goals and took in 5.5 rebounds. Chanze Crusoe also is back after scoring 6.4 points.
The Statesmen averaged 99.1 points per game last season with 75.3 allowed and they outrebound teams 50.6-33.2. William Penn also made 51.1 percent of its field goals last season.
Governor’s State was 11-11 last season and 7-4 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Jaguars return their top-seven scorers from last year’s team led by DeAndrey Robinson and Tariq Deere with 11.7 and 11.0 points per game. Robinson was the leading rebounder a year ago with an 8.0 average and he converted 49 percent of his field goals. Payton Harley scored 10.8 points per game for a team that outscored teams last season 70.6-69.7 and was outrebounded 38.2-35.9. Gerald Duckworth is the leading assist man and had 71 last season.
There is no information readily available about East-West University. The school is located in Chicago and is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
Dordt was 18-8 last season and 13-7 in the GPAC and graduated three of its top-six scorers including a pair of 1,000 career point scorers.
Jacob Vis leads the returning scorers with a 12.5 points per game with 6.0 rebounds and he made 66 percent of his field goal attempts last season. Cade Bleeker knocked down 10.6 points per game and Bryce Coppock scored 9.5 points per game with Camden Bialas averaging 5.2 points per game with 3.4 rebounds in a reserve role.
Dordt outscored teams 81.3-76.2 last season and outrebounded teams 35.8-33.9 while making 49 percent of its field goals.
Dordt and William Penn have split six meetings down the middle with the last contest happening at the NAIA National Championship in 2014 which William Penn won in double overtime 118-116.
Dordt has not played either Governor’s State or East-West in men’s basketball.
The Defenders are scheduled to host Mayville State on Friday, October 29 and Valley City State on Saturday, October 30 at 7:30 pm both nights.
