Women's Basketball Picked Third In GPAC

(Wednesday, October 20; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference has annoucned the results of the 2021-22 Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll and the Dordt Defenders are pegged third in the league.  

Dordt totaled 90 points in the balloting one year after posting a 15-11 record and a 14-8 conference mark which was good for fourth place in the league race.  Dordt returns three of its top-four scorers from a year ago and are led by Ashtyn Veerbeek (Junior; Sioux Center, Iowa) with a 15.4 points per game average to go with 10.8 rebounds per game.  Bailey Beckman (Junior; Panora, Iowa) also retruns after an injury cut her season short and she averaged 12.8 points per contest in 16 games.  Karly Gustafson (Junior; Ethan, South Dakota) also averaged 11.2 points per game with 6.6 rebounds. 

The Defenders will open its season on Thursday, October 21 against Presentation in Aberdeen, South Dakota and will play their first home game on Tuesday, November 2 against Dakota State.  the Defenders open the GPAC season against pre-season favorite Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa on November 17.  

Morningside is the pre-season pick after winning the regular season and GPAC tournament titles in 2021.  Points in the balloting are awarded on 11-1 bases and coaches may not vote for their own team.
