DAKOTA WESLEYAN

Since its 3-2 win over Clarke to start the 2021 season, Dakota Wesleyan has lost eight straight matches for a 1-8 record. The Tigers are 0-2 in conference play, losing road matches to Hastings and Briar Cliff. 

Brady Van Holland is in the midst of his first season as the Tigers head coach. Van Holland played for Dordt from 2011-15 and earned all-conference honors three times. He inherits a DWU squad that returns four starters and 11 players from a 2020 team that went 4-6-1 (T8th) in the GPAC, 5-9 overall. 

DWU was picked 10th of 12 teams in the GPAC preseason poll. 

The Tigers have scored six goals this season, three by Rafael Calderon. Lucas Paixao has the only assist and Hunter Birozy has played every minute in goal, giving up 3.6 per match.

DORDT

The Defenders have won two of their last three matches, defeating Bethany Lutheran in non-conference play followed by a 3-2, last second victory against Midland last weekend. They are tied with Midland and Mount Marty for eighth place in the GPAC standings with a 1-2 record, 2-6-2 overall.

Blake Hansen leads the Defenders with seven goals and one assist, totaling 15 points. Phil Appelt has four goals, followed by C.J. Schulz with three; Santiago Carvajal leads the team with three assists.

Brandon Hansen has made 68 saves and holds a 2-4-2 record in goal. Hansen is giving up 2.1 goals against.

THE SERIES

Since the first match played during the 2006 season, Dordt leads the rivalry with a 9-5-2 record. The Defenders are 2-4-2 in matches played in Mitchell. Last year, Dordt lost 2-0 but is 3-1-1 in its last five matches against DWU.
