Volleyball Learns National Championship Pool Assignment

(Monday, April 19; Sioux Center, Iowa) The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the pool assignments for the 2020 NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa and the Dordt Defenders are in Pool B in the 24-team field.

Dordt is in a pool with Park (Missouri) and Bellevue (Nebraska) and will open play on Tuesday afternoon, April 27 at 3:00 pm.

“Our Pool is composed of three teams that have been in the national poll all season.  Each of us plays in a different conference and none of us have played each other yet this season. The new pool play format for this year’s championship with three team pools instead of four, means that each match really matters and only the top pool finisher in each of the eight pools will advance to the elimination quarterfinal round on Thursday.  Three veteran programs of the NAIA National Championships will be competing hard in Pool B.  We are excited for the opportunity to have our season extended so that we can keep growing in our relationships with Christ and each other through this season,” said Dordt volleyball coach Chad Hanson.

The 24 teams are divided into eight pools with three teams in each pool. The 2020 season is the first year the entire field was expanded to 48 teams.  The top team out of each pool will advance to single-elimination bracket play beginning on Thursday, April 29.

The Defenders will take a 15-6 mark into the field after sweeping MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.  The Bellevue Bruins are 17-5 and Park will go to the final site with a 20-3 mark.

Park was the regular season and post-season champion in the Heart of America Conference and advanced to the final site with a win over IU East.

Bellevue was 12-2 in the North Star Athletic Association and claimed the regular season crown before finishing as runner-up in the post-season tournament. Bellevue beat Texas Wesleyan in the opening round match on Saturday night.
