Men's Volleyball Concludes Regular Season This Week


Dordt will host Jamestown in men’s volleyball play on both Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 26 at 7:00.  Both matches are preceded by a junior varsity match at 5:00.


Crowd size will be limited in the DeWitt. Spectators are asked to sit in designated rows and wear face masks in accordance with the GPAC mandate requiring masks at GPAC competitions this season.

Jamestown enters play with a 16-2 overall record and a 5-0 league mark.  The Jimmies have won 10 matches in a row and their losses are to Grand View on January 29 and February 19.  The matches this week will be the final regular season matches for both teams with the conference tournament beginning on Friday, April 2.

The Jimmies are averaging 12.6 kills per set with a .331 kill efficiency and they have a 2.2-1.6 points off of blocks advantage. The Jimmies also get 1.8 points per set off of ace serves while allowing less than an ace a set.

Tanner Woods leads the team with 2.7 kills per set and Samuel Jackman has a 2.6 average. Clark Steele is good for 2.5 kills and Derek Owens is at 2.2.  Derek Correa puts up 9.1 assists per set and has 14 ace serves this season and Tanner Woods has 23 aces. Braden Neumann tops the team with 2.2 digs per set.


The Defenders are 7-8 and stand 3-2 in league play.    

Caleb Kulesza leads the Dordt effort with 4.34 kills per set and a .269 kill efficiency and he also has a 2.17 digs per set average. Andres Guzman has a 2.49 kills per set average and has 16 service aces while averaging 1.76 digs per set and has handled 94 percent of his serve receptions cleanly. Luke Nelson is good for 1.4 kills per set and leads the team in blocks with 1.11 per contest while Shavon Barker is good for 1.0 blocks per outing.  Boris Le and Jeremy Van Belle have been sharing the setting duties with Le putting up 4.9 assists per outing and Van Belle 3.0.

Dordt has a .192 kill efficiency and 10.47 kills per set and the Defenders get 2.3 blocks per set.


Jamestown handled Dordt on February 16 by scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 behind nine kills each by Tanner Woods and Samuel Jackman. Caleb Kulesza topped all players with 13 kills and Le put up 14 assists.

Dordt’s last match was a March 18 win over Morningside by set scores of 25-12, 25-19, 25-21. Kulesza had 11 kills and Nelson eight in the win while Le and Van Belle had 14 and 13 respectively. Lucas Lopes accounted for a team high five digs in match that was not as close as the score.


Jamestown swept Morningside on back to back nights on March 19 and 20. Tanner Woods had 11 kills in the Saturday match while Zack Meyer had eight and Correa put up 36 assists and Patrick Magadia and Meyer each had three service aces.


Both teams will await the conclusion of the regular season and will play in the GPAC post-season tournament on April 9-10 at Jamestown, North Dakota.

The Defenders will have a new conference affiliation for 2021 with the league comprised of:

Jamestown 5-0/16-2

Dordt 3-2/7-8

Morningside 1-4/2-9

Ottawa (Kansas) 1-4/4-9

Hastings and Central Christian (Kansas) were scheduled to have teams in 2021 but have put their debuts off until 2022.  Briar Cliff disbanded their program in August 2020.
