Men's Volleyball Hosts Morningside For Senior Night


Dordt will host Morningside on Thursday night, March 18 at 7:00 pm at the DeWitt Gym in conference play.


Crowd size will be limited in the DeWitt. Spectators are asked to sit in designated rows and wear face masks in accordance with the GPAC mandate requiring masks at GPAC competitions this season.

Six players and one manager will be recognized following the conclusion of the match on Thursday night as they conclude their involvement in the Dordt men’s volleyball program this season.   Those individuals are:  Tommy Schussler, Shavon Barker, Spencer Vanderschee, Sam Toenies, Matthew Minderhoud, Jeremy Van Belle and Carter Wyatt.


Morningside is 2-6 this season and 1-2 in the GPAC.

The Mustangs are averaging 8.1 kills per set while giving up 10.8 assists per outing. Teams have compiled a .227 kill efficiency against the Mustangs and opponents are getting 2.3 points per set off of blocks while the Mustangs get 1.4.

Kahaki Kahoiwai is averaging 2.37 kills per set with a .138 kill efficiency and 1.93 digs per outing. Tylor Godown is good for 1.96 kills per set and 1.33 digs. Godown is also leading the team with eight service aces and Kyle Cox is putting up 6.15 assists per set.


The Defenders are 6-8 this season with conference wins over Ottawa and Morningside.  Dordt is currently 2-2 in league play with two matches in league play remaining.    

Caleb Kulesza leads the Dordt effort with 4.38 kills per set and a .264 kill efficiency and he also has a 2.24 digs per set average. Andres Guzman has a 2.5 kills per set average and has 14 ace serves and averages 1.76 digs per set and has handled 94 percent of his serve receptions cleanly. Luke Nelson is good for 1.3 kills per set and leads the team in blocks with 1.08 per contest while Shavon Barker is good for 1.03 blocks per outing.  Boris le and Jeremy Van Belle have been splitting the setting duties with 4.9 and 2.9 assists per set respectively.

Dordt has a .185 kill efficiency and 10.44 kills per set and the Defenders get 2.3 blocks per set.


Dordt has a pair of 3-0 wins over the Mustangs this season with a conference victory on February 13 by set scores of 25-22, 25-9, 25-22.  Kulesza led Dordt with 18 kills and Le had 22 assists while Guzman had nine digs. Morningside was topped by Kahoiwai with eight kills and Cox had 14 assists.

February 20 the two teams met again and Dordt was a 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 winner in the non-conference match in Sioux City. Kulesza had 15 kills and Guzman got seven kills. Le Had 17 assists and Van Belle had 11 with Levi Ewald and Le each had 10 digs. Jacob Baynes accounted for 10 kills for Morningside and Cox had 23 assists. Jacob Baynes has a 2.24 kills per set average in the last five matches.


St. Ambrose defeated Morningside 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 on March 12 with Kahoiwai had 10 kills with Cox recording 18 assists in the loss.

Dordt beat Ottawa 25-17, 15-25, 25-18, 25-22 on March 12 in conference play. Kulesza and Guzman had 16 and 14 kills respectively with Le and Van Belle getting 20 and 15 assists each.  Ewald accounted for 11 digs and four service aces.


Dordt will host Jamestown at 7:00 in a conference match on Thursday, March 25. .

The Defenders will have a new conference affiliation for 2021 with the league comprised of:

Jamestown 4-0/14-2

Dordt 2-2/6-8

Morningside 1-2/2-6

Ottawa (Kansas) 1-4/4-9

Hastings and Central Christian (Kansas) were scheduled to have teams in 2021 but have put their debuts off until 2022.  Briar Cliff disbanded their program in August 2020.
