Men's Volleyball Hosts Ottawa In Home Opener


Dordt will host Ottawa on Friday night, March 12 at 7:00 pm at the DeWitt Gym in conference play.


Crowd size will be limited to 30% capacity in the DeWitt. Spectators are asked to sit in designated rows and wear face masks in accordance with the GPAC mandate requiring masks at GPAC competitions this season.

Ottawa is 4-8 this season and stand 1-3 in league play. The Braves started the season with back to back wins over Missouri Valley and Clarke and actually took three of their first four matches. Since February 5 the Braves have put together a 1-7 mark.

The Braves have a balanced attack led by Ashan Jordan with a 2.81 kills per set average and Brennan Hagar is averaging 2.62 kills per outing. Cade Berg and Tyler Gardenhire are both averaging over two kills per set at 2.16 and 2.03 respectively. Gardenhire also accounts for 6.03 assists per set and has nine ace serves and he gets to 2.05 digs per outing.

The Braves average 11.53 kills while allowing 11.35 and they get 2.05 points per set off of blocks while giving up 1.79.


The Defenders are 5-8 this season with a wins over Clarke, St. Ambrose and two wins over Morningside and Dordt has a non-conference win over Roosevelt. Dordt is currently 1-2 in league play with three matches in league play remaining.    

Caleb Kulesza leads the Dordt effort with 4.41 kills per set and a .282 kill efficiency and he also has a 2.22 digs per set average. Andres Guzman has a 2.41 kills per set average and has a team high 14 ace serves and averages 1.76 digs per set and has handled 94 percent of his serve receptions cleanly. Luke Nelson is good for 1.3 kills per set and leads the team in blocks with 1.13 per contest while Shavon Barker is good for 1.03 blocks per outing.  Levi Vroom puts up 8.55 assists per set and Boris Le’s assist average is 4.85. Levi Ewald leads the team in digs at 2.28 per set and he has 13 ace serves.

Dordt has a .181 kill efficiency and 10.41 kills per set and the Defenders get 2.3 blocks per set.


Dordt was swept by Ottawa on February 5 by a score of 25-19, 25-20, 25-19. Kulesza had 12 kills to lead Dordt and Vroom put up 19 assists. Shavon Barker led Dordt with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Gardenhire accounted for 11 kills and 13 assists and Jordan had 10 kills while Cade Berg put up 20 assists.


Dordt split its two matches last Saturday at Viterbo and lost a 3-1 decision to the hosts to cap the day. Kulesza had 20 kills and Guzman 14 while Van Belle put up 20 assists and Boris Le had 19.

Ottawa lost to Missouri Baptist 25-15, 25-18, 25-13 on March 6 with Brennan Hagar accounting for six kills and Gardenhire had 16 assists.  The Braves had 20 kills and 21 errors in the match.


Dordt will host Morningside on March 18 at 7:00 in a conference match.

The Defenders will have a new conference affiliation for 2021 with the league comprised of:

Jamestown 4-0/11-2

Dordt 1-2/5-8

Morningside 1-2/1-5

Ottawa (Kansas) 1-3/4-6

Hastings and Central Christian (Kansas) were scheduled to have teams in 2021 but have put their debuts off until 2022.  Briar Cliff disbanded their program in August 2020.
