(Wednesday; March 3; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference has announced the postseason honors for the recently completed 2020-21 season and Dordt had four athletes honored in voting done by conference coaches.
Garrett Franken (Senior; Atlantic, Iowa), Jesse Jansma (Senior; Sioux Center, Iowa), Jacob Vis (Freshman; Rock Valley, Iowa) and Cade Bleeker (Sophomore; Sioux Center, Iowa) all were on the list released Wednesday morning by the GPAC.
Franken claimed first-team honors for the second straight season after averaging a team high 15.0 points per game with 7.2 rebounds and he converted 47 percent of his field goals and averaged over two assists per game. Franken also claimed second-team honors at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season. He will graduate from Dordt with 1,322 career points and ranks 15th all-time and his 629 career rebounds ranks him 9th.
“Garrett has been a consistent player the last three years. A four man that can really dribble and make plays is a real blessing, and he was able to provide that for our team,” said Dordt basketball coach Brian Van Haaften. “He was a two-year captain and led our team mentally as well. His positive personality was infectious with the rest of the team and he loved to compete.”
Jansma also earned first-team honors after converting 14.7 points per game and he handed out a team high 3.8 assists per game with 3.6 rebounds per outing. Jansma converted 43 three-point baskets and ends his career with1,338 career points and is 14th all-time at Dordt. He ranks 10th all-time in assists with 281 and is 5th all-time in made three-point baskets with 203. He was a second-team pick in 2019-20.
“Jesse made a goal this year of being a first-team all-conference player and he got it done. I am really happy for him as nobody comes in and gets more work done in the gym than him in our program. His leadership both on the floor and off was top notch, as he typifies the Defender Way in all aspects of our basketball program,” said Van Haaften.
Bleeker was an honorable mention selection and scored 10.6 points per game with 3.7 rebounds and he made 48 percent of his field goals and led the team with 44 made three-point shots. Bleeker was a second-team pick in 2019-20.
“Cade is a fantastic shooter and he improved a lot on the dribble this year. He was defended much better this year, and had to adjust his game during the season. We look forward to seeing him take a big step next year and be a leader in our program,” said Van Haaften.
Vis was an honorable mention pick after averaging 12.5 points per game with 6.0 rebounds and he made 66 percent of his field goals and blocked a team high 31 shots.
“Jacob hasn’t played much basketball over the last two years so what he accomplished this year is awesome. He improved defensively during the season and was a constant force around the basket for us. He will be a multi- dimensional player for us in the future, and will be able to score in more ways, and be an even better GPAC player very soon.
The Defenders completed the 2020-21 season with an 18-8 mark and posted a 13-7 GPAC record.
