The Dordt University Theatre Arts Department will present their spring mainstage play, The Diviners, on March 17-20 at 7:30 p.m. and March 20 at 2 p.m. in the 4th Avenue Theatre. A livestreamed performance will also be offered online on March 17 at 7:30 p.m.
The play was written by Jim Leonard Jr., and is directed by Dr. Teresa Ter Haar. This “tragic folk tale” is the story of an intellectually challenged young man and his friendship with a disenchanted preacher in southern Indiana in the early 1930s. Due to language, this production is most appropriate for audience members ages high school and up.
Director Teresa TerHaar chose The Diviners for Dordt University in part because it addresses several sets of themes – faith and doubt, religion and magic, love and grief. She says, “This script has been on my list to direct for many years. I’ve been waiting until I could stage it in our black box to propose it. This is the year!”
The Dordt University Theatre Arts program produces two mainstage shows per year and multiple one acts and student productions. Dordt students have the opportunity to major or minor in theatre, and non-majors also have the opportunity to receive theatre scholarships and participate in productions.
Tickets for The Diviners will go on sale on February 24 at dordttickets.com.
