Men's Volleyball In Des Moines This Weekend


Dordt will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to face St. Ambrose (Iowa) and Ottawa (Arizona) in non-conference volleyball at a classic hosted by Grand View. The Defenders will face St. Ambrose at 2:00 pm on Friday and will meet Ottawa on Saturday, January 30 at 10:00 am.


No visiting fans will be allowed in the Grand View venue.

St. Ambrose is 0-4 this season and 0-1 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Bees very nearly won their first match of the season on January 26 in absorbing a 3-2 loss to Trinity Christian in league play.  St. Ambrose also lost to Clarke (Iowa) in five sets to open the season.

St. Ambrose is averaging 9.71 kills per set while surrendering 12.53 kills per outing and the Bees have a .155 kill efficiency. The Bees score 1.94 points per set on blocks but allow 1.41 service aces per set.

Skyler Marushige has a team high 3.65 kills per set and his kill efficiency is .234. Jeramie Gutierrez has a 1.76 kills per set and Jason Bageanis is averaging 1.53 kills per outing. Harry Khaira is putting up 8.06 assists per set and has five service aces. Ricardo Ubior has a team high 3.06 digs per set.

Ottawa is 2-1 this season and suffered its first loss of the season on January 23 with a 3-2 loss to Campbellsville on January 23.

The Spirit is led by Jordan Moses with a 3.31 kill average and Conner Duyck and Emery Outin both average over two kills per set. Nicho Calles puts up 8.13 assists per set and Andrew De’Leon gets to a team high 2.69 digs per set. 

Ottawa is averaging 11.23 kills per set while allowing 8.85 and the Spirit averages 2.31 blocks per set with a slight 19-17 service ace season advantage.


The Defenders are 1-2 this season with a win over Clarke and a pair of losses to Park and Missouri Valley.

Caleb Kulesza leads the Dordt effort with 4.0 kills per set and a .226 kill efficiency. Andres Guzman has a 2.91 kills per set average and has a .243 kill efficiency. Guzman has a team high seven ace serves and averages 1.64 digs per set and has handled 92 percent of his serve receptions cleanly. Luke Nelson is good for 1.64 kills per set and leads the team in blocks with just under one per set. Levi Vroom accounts for 8.82 assists per set and Levi Ewald shares team honors in digs with Kulesza at 2.09 per set.

Dordt has a .189 kill efficiency and 10.82 digs per set and the Defenders get 1.45 blocks per set.


This is the first meeting between Dordt and Ottawa (Arizona) while St. Ambrose holds a 2-0 lead on Dordt in the series.


St. Ambrose lost a 25-13, 21-25, 31-29, 26-28, 15-8 decision to Trinity Christian on Tuesday night with Marushige leading the team with 22 kills and Clark has 12 kills. Khaira put up 42 assists and Ubior had 19 digs.   Trinity Christian had a better kill efficiency with a .235 match total and also recorded eight service aces to three for the Bees.

Ottawa was tripped by Campbellsville (Kentucky) on January 23, 25-14, 16-25, 13-25, 28-26, 15-11. Moses had a team high 16 kills for Ottawa and Outin had 11 kills. De’Leon put up 35 assists and King had 13 digs.


Dordt will open conference play on Friday, February, 5 at Ottawa (Kansas) before playing a pair of matches on Saturday, February 13 against Morningside and Viterbo.

Ottawa (Kansas) 0-0/2-1

Hastings and Central Christian (Kansas) were scheduled to have teams in 2021 but have put their debuts off until 2022.  Briar Cliff disbanded their program in August 2020.
