Men's Volleyball Opens Season In Missouri Thursday


The Dordt men’s volleyball team will travel to Parkville, Missouri on Thursday and Friday, January 21 and 22 to play three matches hosted by Park University.  The Defenders will face Park on Thursday at 6:30 pm and then follow that up with a pair of matches Friday afternoon against Clarke at 12:00 and Missouri Valley at 5:00. This will be the first weekend of play for all teams.


No visiting fans will be allowed in the Park University venue.

Dordt vs Missouri Valley  


Park was 12-1 last season and had a 5-0 conference record when the season ended in March.  The Pirates have been one of the top teams in NAIA men’s volleyball in recent seasons and had a .299 kill efficiency in 2020 and averaged over 13 kills per set led by Hiago Crins with a 3.5 kills per set average. Luciano Bucci averaged 11.1 assists per set and had 10 ace serves.

Clarke was 4-17 last season and 2-9 in the Heart of America Conference. The Pride was led by Nick Ramos and his 3.48 kills per set and Mike Jenkins accounted for 6.77 assists per set. Jenkins had 17 ace serves but Clarke was at a 110-82 ace serves disadvantage for the season.

Missouri Valley was 13-12 last season and 5-5 in the Heart of America Conference and averaged 12 kills per set with a .211 kill efficiency. Simon Joly averaged 3.1 kills per set to lead the Vikings and Joshua Aspirars had a team high 10.7 assists per set. Joly led the team with 19 aces and Joao Victor Bonanoni led the team with 2.73 digs per outing.


The Defenders were 7-9 last season and were on a three-match winning streak when the season ended after a March 13 win over Clarke.

Dordt hit for a .174 kill efficiency with 10.4 kills. The top returning attacker is Caleb Kulesza with a 2.4 average.  Dordt will employ a new setter as Tyler Postma graduated with an 8.1 assists per set average. Luke Nelson and Shavon Barker are both back after averaging just under a block per set and the top returning digger is Levi Ewald with a 2.48 averag.


Dordt and Park played on February 29, 2020 and Park won the home match 25-18, 19-25, 25-13, 25-19.  Garrett Vander Zee had 20 kills for the Defenders.

Dordt and Missouri Valley did not play in 2020.

Dordt beat Clarke 3-1 last season 15-25, 25-16, 29-27, 25-20 to cap their season with Vander Zee recording 17 kills and Tyler Postma had 31 assists. Levi Ewald got to 10 digs. Ramos led all players with 24 kills in the losing effort.


Dordt will travel to Des Moines on January 29 and 30 to face Ottawa (Arizona), St. Ambrose and Graceland.

Hastings and Central Christian (Kansas) were scheduled to have teams in 2021 but have put their debuts off until 2022.  Briar Cliff disbanded their program in August 2020.
