Women's Basketball Battles GPAC Frontrunner

The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team will play a game at home against Briar Cliff on Tuesday, November 24. The contest starts at 6:00.
The Briar Cliff women are 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the GPAC. The Chargers have wins over Dakota Wesleyan (80-63), Mount Marty (86-54) and the College of Saint Mary (68-47).
Briar Cliff outscoring teams 75.2-55.4 and outrebound teams 35-30.8. Briar Cliff has a 45.3 shooting percentage and is converting 34.2 percent of its three-point shots. The Chargers limit teams to 40.6 percent field goal shooting and Briar Cliff also gets to the free throw line six times more per game than its opponents.
Kennedy Benne is scoring 15.0 points per game with 4.6 rebounds and has eight assists with 20 steals. Konnor Sudmann is good for 13.2 points per game with 7.2 rebounds and Madelyn Deitchler has made 11.8 points per game with 4.8 rebounds while Payton Slaughter has converted for an 11.6 points per game average and leads the team with seven made three-point baskets. Slaughter also leads the team with 21 assists and she also has 14 steals.
Dordt is 2-3 this season with wins over Grand View (75-64) and Midland (70-58) and losses to Dakota State (79-60), Sterling (80-71) and Concordia (73-62).
Dordt is getting outscored 70.8-67.6 through five games. Dordt has outrebounded teams 46-37.6 but have converted 36.4 percent of its field goals and 28.8 percent of its three-point shots. Teams are making 40.1 percent of its field goals and 33 percent of its three-point shots against the Defenders.
Bailey Beckman leads the team with 12.8 points per game average while Karly Gustafson is averaging 10.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest while converting 50 percent of her field goals. Erika Feenstra adds 11.0 points per game with 5.6 rebounds and Ashtyn Veerbeek is good for 8.6 points per game with a team high 8.4 rebounds per game. Mya Chmielewski adds 7.4 points per game in a reserve role and Baylee Tetzlaff is good for 4.2 points per game.
Briar Cliff handled the College of Saint Mary on November 21 by a final of 68-47 after leading 32-20 at halftime. Konnor Sudmann scored 14 points and had five rebounds while Madelyn Deitchler scored 13 with six rebounds. Paityn Hagberg came off the bench to score 12 and converted three, three-point baskets. The Chargers forced 30 turnovers in the contest and had a 36-34 rebounding advantage while limiting the Flames to just 43 field goal attempts.
Dordt got off to a slow start on Saturday and trailed Concordia 16-7 after one quarter. The Defenders battled back and took a one point lead early in the fourth quarter but ended up losing 73-62 when Concordia knocked down three-point shots on three-straight possessions. Bailey Beckman had 16 points and Erika Feenstra accounted for 14 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.
The two teams split their games last season with the home team winning in convincing fashion in both instances.
Dordt won the November 23 game 93-58 behind a 29 point second quarter and a 28 point quarter while fashioning a 71-41 third quarter lead on the way to a 93-58 final. Gabby Kreykes had 16 and Payton Harmsen scored 14 and Dordt also had a 47-31 rebounding edge.
The two teams met again on February 12 and Briar Cliff controlled the contest on the way to an 83-65 win. Konnor Sudmann scored 23 and was 14-14 from the free throw line and Madelyn Deitchler scored 22 with nine rebounds. Dordt was paced by Erika Feenstra’s 22 points and Bailey Beckman had 14.
Briar Cliff leads the overall series 50-42.
Dordt will travel to Morningside on Wednesday, December 2 and will host Doane on Saturday, December 5.
