Football Travels To Concordia


Dordt will travel to Seward, Nebraska for a GPAC football contest on Saturday afternoon, October 24 with kickoff at 1:00.

The Bulldogs are 4-1 this season in the GPAC and overall with their loss coming at the hands of Northwestern on October 17 by a 44-19 score. Prior to that the Bulldogs opened the season with wins over Doane, Hastings, Briar Cliff and Jamestown.

Patrick Daberkow’s team is averaging 24 points per game and has been stingy on defense with 16 points given up per game. Concordia has rushed for 152 yards per game and 230 in the air.  Teams are rushing for 107 yards against the Bulldog defense while throwing for 207. 

Jonah Weyand leads the team with 471 rushing yards and a 5.2 yards per carry average and he has seven touchdowns. Lyle Whitney has run for 204 yards and has a 3.4 yards per carry average.  Blake Culbert is the quarterback and is 85-169 passing for 1,154 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. Culbert’s favorite target is Cayden Beran with 24 catches for a 9.4 yards per catch average. Korrell Koehlmoos has 18 catches for a 21.3 yards per catch average and Garrett Schardt has 15 catches with a 17.4 yards per catch average. Lane Casteneda has 12 catches for a 9.6 average.

Lane Napier leads the team with 23 tackles and has a sack and Payton Kidder has 21 tackles.  Both Napier and Kidder have one sack each. Jayzen Armstrong and Caydren Cox have 21 and 20 tackles each and Cox has three tackles for loss. Karson Dickson has three sacks this sason and Chase Hammons has a team high five sacks. Concordia has three interceptions with one each by three different players.

Castaneda has punted 30 times and has a 39.2 average while Jordan Spilinek is 4-7 on field goals with a long of 34 and he is 13-14 on point after tries.


The Defenders are 4-1 this season and in the GPAC with wins over Midland (22-14), Dakota Wesleyan (47-10), Jamestown (66-13) and Doane (44-19).  The loss for Dordt cam on October 3 against Northwestern (48-40).

The Defenders run for 292 yards per game on average and pass for 239.  Dordt’s defense allows 110 yards per game on the ground and 196 in the air. Dordt is outscoring teams on average 44-21.

Noah Clayberg has completed 77-114 passes for 979 yards and seven touchdowns with two interceptions.  He has also run 75 times for 528 yards—a 7.0 yards per carry average and has nine rushing touchdowns. Carter Schiebout has 420 yards rushing on 66 attempts with a 6.4 yards per carry average with five touchdowns. Michael Sondermann has run 49 times for 195 yards and a 4.0 yards per carry average.  

Levi Jungling has caught 37 passes for a 12.9 yards per catch average and has three touchdown catches. Ben Heuvelhorst has a 9.8 yards per catch average with two touchdowns and 17 snags.  Jayden Huisman has nine catches for 13.8 yards per catch and Raphael Carr has an 11.4 yards per catch average on eight catches. 

Brett Zachman has converted 21-26 point after tries and is 5-5 on field goal attempts with a long of 43. Clayberg has punted 14 times for a 39.7 yards per punt average.

Josh Mrazek has 29 tackles and Nathan Kabongo and Bryce Christian each have 25 tackles.  Brayton Van Kekerix has 24 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss and Jalen Placide has 23 tackles.  Colyn Oostenink, David Kacmarynski and Thomas Macomber all have four sacks.


The NAIA will not have any national rankings until spring 2020.


Dordt defeated Doane 44-19 on October 17.  The Defenders allowed a Doane touchdown before scoring 27 unanswered the rest of the half for their fourth win of the season. Dordt outgained the Tigers 528-162 and held Doane to 23 yards passing. Noah Clayberg was 17-24 passing with three touchdowns and 230 yards.  Carter Schiebout ran 13 times for 103 yards and Clayberg ran 15 times for 62 yards.

Northwestern was a 31-17 winner over Concordia in Orange City last week.  Concordia never led but had the lead down to 16-14 midway through the third quarter and 23-17 early in the fourth quarter after a field goal. Concordia had the ball at the Northwestern 16 with under six minutes to go but an interception on fourth down ended the scoring threat and responded with an 80 yard drive that effectively ended the Concordia hopes. Weyand ran for 87 yards on 26 carries and Culbert was 17-40 passing for 234yards and two touchdowns. Schardt had seven catches for 132 yards and two scores and Cayden Beran had five catches for 27 yards.


Dordt shutout the Bulldogs 35-0 last season on October 26 in Sioux Center. Dordt was up 28-0 at halftime on drives of 79, 36, 42 and 10 yards. The Defenders outgained Concordia 379-170 and had a significant time of possession advantage 38-22. Carter Schiebout had 19 carries for 101 yards and Noah Clayberg had 20 carries for 82 yards. Clayberg also copleted 12 passes for 132 yards and had nine completions to Jungling for 92 yards and Jake Dodge had three catches for 40 yards. Josh Mrazek had 13 tackles and Kacmarynski had two sacks.   

Dordt has won two games in a row in the series with a 38-19 win in 2018. The 2017 and 2016 meetings were both won by Concordia by a touchdown.  The teams haven’t played in Seward since 2014 when Concordia prevailed 38-14.


The Bulldogs are on the road against Morningside after having a week off next week.
