Piano recital to include pieces from Debussy and Chopin

Claira De Jong

The community is invited to the senior piano recital of Dordt University student Claira De Jong. The free recital will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A public reception will follow.

A highlight of the recital is Debussy’s Reflections on the Water. This piece, which is said to be characterized by sweeping cadenzas and flowing melodies, is evidence of Debussy’s keen interest in water. De Jong’s favorite piece of the program is Chopin’s technically-challenging Scherzo in B-flat Minor, which was composed to encompass a myriad of emotions and to keep the listener on the edge of their seat. The recital will also feature a guest cello performance by Jaren Brue, a senior engineering major and De Jong’s fiancé.

De Jong, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, is majoring in K-12 choral and instrumental education with a minor in piano performance. She has studied piano with MaryLou Wielenga since 2017. She was the recipient of the Ringerwole Piano Scholarship in 2017 and serves as accompanist for Dordt’s Concert Choir.

Masks are required for all recital attendees and seating will be socially distanced. Dordt University continues to monitor how Covid-19 affects our campus and community. Please visit on the day of the event to see if there are any restrictions on in-person attendance or cancellations.
