(Wednesday, September 23; Sioux Center, Iowa) The 2020-21 school year marks the 26th year of existence for the Defender Gold Club (DGC) and the organization continues to reach new heights while pushing forward Defender Athletics.
Originally founded in 1995 to assists in providing equipment upgrades to athletic programs, the DGC and Dordt University has made an increased effort to increase monetary gifts and to also expand the footprint of the Gold Club. While making this transition Dordt University appointed a DGC Officer in 2018 and increased efforts by head coaches and athletic programs to gather support for their individual programs.
Ways in which the Defender Gold Club impact the experience of student-athletes is by supporting scholarships, team trips and service opportunities while assisting programs in implementing the Defender Way with their programs.
In 2019 the Defender Gold Club funded over $102,000 for a weight room specifically for athletes. The project was completed in 45 days and included involvement by alumni, parents, grandparents and supporters of Defender Athletics. Programs have been able to fund leadership retreats and purchase state of the art training equipment—baseball utilizes pitching and hitting software to analyze data and the women’s soccer team uses GPS monitors to track performance on the field.
“The energy and buzz around Defender Athletics with the return of fall athletics is seen not only in our student-athletes and campus, but in our supporters as well. From parents, grandparents, alumni and friends of Dordt athletics, their eagerness to support Defender Athletics during these times shows the love and commitment our student-athletes have from Defender Nation,” said DGC Officer Kyle Lindbergh.
The DGC has increased its membership from 146 members and 10 named scholarships in 2015 to 430 members in 2020 with 28 named scholarships and $855,000 raised.
