(Thursday, February 27; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference has announced the postseason awards for the 2020 Indoor Track and Field season.
Craig Heynen has been named the Fred Beile-Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Men’s Coach-of-the-Year in voting conducted by the conference coaches.
Heynen guided the Defender men to a runner-up finish at the GPAC Championship on Saturday in Mitchell, South Dakota. The finish is the best by the men’s team since the GPAC was formed for the 2000-01 school year. Heynen was named the GPAC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2012.
“Craig’s ability to challenge and train the student-athletes under his care doesn’t go unnoticed. While this honor is due largely to his team’s performance on Saturday his impact is much more far-reaching than simply good marks and National Championship qualifiers. His athletes leave Dordt profoundly changed because of his work with them,” said Dordt athletic director Ross Douma.
The Defenders will conclude the indoor track and field season at the NAIA National Championships from March 5-7 at Brookings, South Dakota.
The award is named after Fred Beile who coached at Doane from 1973 to 2002.
