Vander Plaats Named GPAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year

(Thursday, February 27; Sioux Center, Iowa) Honors for the 2020 Great Plains Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field season have been announced and Jacob Vander Plaats (Junior; Sioux Center, Iowa) has been named the GPAC Men’s Athlete-of-the-Year as the highest individual point scorer at the GPAC Track and Field Championships held last week in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Vander Plaats claimed three individual titles at the meet as he won the 1,000 meters, mile and 3,000 meters. His time of 8:50.48 in the 3,000 meters was also named the Outstanding Performance-of-the-Meet in the men’s track section as voted on by GPAC coaches. Vander Plaats won the 1,000 meters in 2:31.68 and also took the mile in 4:23.45 before claiming the 3,000.
Vander Plaats has met the automatic qualifying standard for the NAIA National Track and Field Championships in all three events and was twice named the GPAC Indoor Track and Field Athlete-of-the-Week during the season.
Vander Plaats is the first men’s track and field competitor from Dordt to claim the Athlete of the Year honor.
