Baseball Opens GPAC Season

Dordt is scheduled to play four games with Midland this weekend in Fremont, Nebraska. The Friday, February 28 games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 and the Saturday games will go at 1:00. This is the GPAC opener for both teams.
Midland is 2-9 this season with wins over Our Lady of the Lake and Arizona Christian.
Midland is batting .263 this season while teams are batting .282 against the Warriors. Darius Johnson has a .395 batting average with 17 hits in 11 games and has scored a team high 12 runs. Matt Abdelnour is batting .350 with 14 hits and ten runs batted in and Austin Hamilton has ten runs batted in and three doubles with a .265 batting average. Johnson has four stolen bases to lead the Warriors.
Devyn Cary and James Scurto each have one pitching win and Scurto has 20 innings pitched in three starts and has struck out a team high 17 batters. Steven Boyd is 0-2 this season with a 4.24 earned run average and has 12 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched.
The Defenders are 1-5 this season with a win over McPherson last weekend getting them into the win column.
Cam Pfafman has a .369 batting average with seven hits and two runs scored. Tyce Marquez is batting .357 with five hits and Luis Camacho has a .333 batting average with six hits, a double, a triple and two homeruns and a team high nine runs batted in. Alexander Chavez is batting .318 and John Emerson .294 this season.
The Defenders have utilized several pitchers to start the season and have split 37 innings among 13 pitchers. Willem Hoekstra and Isaac Vander Haart each have two games started this season and Luke Drooger has a team high six strikeouts through four innings pitched.
The Defenders went 1-3 last weekend at McPherson. The Defenders batted .306 as a team and allowed McPherson to bat .368. The Bulldogs outscored Dordt 43-31 in the two doubleheaders. Chavez batted .467 with seven hits and two doubles and Steve Tiersma had five hits and five runs scored and batted .417. Logan Horne pitched Dordt to the win last weekend with seven hits allowed over five innings and he struck out four.
Midland played Our Lady of the Lake on February 21 and 22 and won an 8-2 decision while losing the other three games by a combined four runs.
Dordt split their two doubleheaders with Midland last season with a 5-2 win on March 29 and a 6-4 decision on April 1. Midland took the other games by 4-0 and 2-0 scores. Isaac Vander Haart threw a five-hit shutout in one of the Dordt wins and Luke Drooger and Cole Vande Vegte combined for the win in the 6-4 decision with Vande Vegte getting the save while pitching two scoreless innings.
The Defenders depart for Arizona on March 6 and will play 10 games from March 7-13.
Midland is scheduled to face Valley City State on March 6 and March 8 in their next play.
