Basketball Hosts Hastings For Senior Day


The Dordt Defender basketball teams will be at home against Hastings on Saturday, February 15 with the women’s contest at 2:00 and the men’s game at about 4:00.


The seniors in both the women’s and men’s programs will be recognized at today’s doubleheader.  The men will be recognized at the conclusion of the women’s game before warmups for the men’s game and the women will be recognized immediately at halftime of the men’s contest. 


The Hastings Bronco women are 26-1 this season after seeing their bid for an undefeated season come to an end on Wednesday at Concordia.  The Broncos and Bulldogs are now tied for first place in the GPAC with 18-1 records and three games remaining.

Shandra Farmer leads Hastings with a 14.0 points per game average and she has 107 assists in 26 games played with 67 steals and she’s been charged with 43 turnovers. Farmer is converting 50.8 percent of her field goal attempts.   Gabby Grasso is adding 12.5 points per game and her shooting percentage is 49.2 while Sophia Pankratz and Taylor Beacom have 11.2 and 10.8 points per game averages. Beacom has done her damage in a reserve role and Grasso is the leading rebounder with a 6.8 average. Pankratz has a team high 37 made three-point baskets and she is making 46.3 percent of her long shots.

Hastings is outscoring teams 77.4-58.6 and have been outrebounded by a slight 34.5-34.1 difference.  The Broncos convert 44.1 percent of their field goals while allowing teams to make 38.5 percent. Hastings also has 402 steals in 27 games played.

The Hastings men are 13-14 this season and 6-11 in the GPAC. After winning four in a row from January 15-25 the Broncos have lost four in a row from January 29-February 12.

Bart Hiscock scores 21.2 points per game with 8.3 rebounds and Brendan Lipovsky adds 12.1 points per game with 4.2 rebounds. Mason Hiemstra adds 9.8 points per game and Zach Kitten is adding 9.1 points per outing. The Broncos’ leading three-point shooter is Shane Chamberlain with 45 and he is making 36.3 percent of his long shots. Hiemstra tops the team with 80 assists and Logan Cale has handed out 68 assists.


The Defenders are 20-7 this season and 12-7 in the GPAC.

Erika Feenstra is averaging a team high 18.0 points per game with 5.9 rebounds and she is making 60.9 percent of her field goals and is 118-146 from the free throw line. Rachel Evavold and Karly Gustafson are both averaging 9.9 points per game and have converted 56.9 and 61.4 percent of their field goal attempts. Bailey Beckman’s average is 7.9 points per game and Gabby Kreykes is at 6.3. Payton Harmsen leads the team with 38 made three-point baskets

Dordt outscores teams 81.3-68.1 and convert 46.4 percent of its field goals and 29.4 percent of its three-point shots. The Defenders allow 38.4 percent field goal shooting and 27.6 from the arc.  Dordt is outrebounding teams 43.0-33.2 and have forced 325 turnovers by steals.

The Defender men are 20-8 this season and 11-7 in the league with two regular season games remaining.

Garrett Franken leads the team with a 16.0 points per game average and 7.5 rebounds with 58 assists and 16 blocks. Jesse Jansma is at 11.6 points per game and is second on the team in made three-point baskets with 45. Cade Bleeker’s average is 10.7 points per game and he gets 4.3 rebounds.  He has made a team high 61 three-point shots and is converting 46.6 percent of his attempts from behind the arc. Zach Bussard and Marcus Winterfeld are at 9.5 and 9.2 points per game and Ben Gesink and Josh Van Lingen score 7.6 and 7.2 respectively. Gesink has lifted his three-point success to 40.5 percent. Chad Barkema is at 10.2 points per game and 5.1 rebounds. Barkema also has 19 steals, 14 blocked shots and 51 assists but Barkema is out indefinitely with a hand injury suffered in the loss to Dakota Wesleyan on January 15.  Jansma leads the Defenders with 73 assists and Dordt has six players with 49 or more assists and seven players who have converted 23 or more three-point shots.

Dordt is outscoring teams 86.2-76.2 and outrebound teams 39.9-34.6.  Dordt also converts 48.0 percent of its field goal tries and 39.1 percent of its three-point shots while limiting teams to 44.4 percent field goal shooting and 35.5 behind the arc.


The Broncos lost a clash of top-5 women’s teams on Wednesday night at Concordia. The hosts got out to a 17-10 lead and pushed the difference to 32-20 at halftime. Hastings tried to rally and got as close as 46-41 in the fourth quarter before losing 53-46. Emma Grenfell scored a team high 12 points and the Broncos were held to 21.3 percent field goal shooting and both teams had 37 rebounds.

Dordt had an early lead but was unable to maintain it against Briar Cliff on Wednesday night and lost 83-65 on the road. Erika Feenstra scored 22 while Bailey Beckman dropped in a career high four three-point shots and scored 14 points.

The Hastings men fell to Concordia 83-77 after leading 42-41 at halftime. The Broncos were led by Hiscock’s 22 points on 9-27 shooting and he had 10 rebounds. Hiemstra scored 13 and had six rebounds and Lipovsky added 12. Hastings converted 30-64 field goals but was outrebounded 44-32.

The Defender men led Briar Cliff 45-31 at halftime but fell behind 68-62 in the second half. Dordt answered with a 7-0 run and closed the game out with free throws on Wednesday night for an 92-86 final. Franken scored 30 and had eight rebounds while Winterfeld scored 16 and Chandler Brunsting converted 3-5 three-point shots for nine points.


Dordt traveled to Hastings on December 14 and the women lost an 88-69 decision after trailing 46-36 at halftime. Feenstra scored 20 to lead all scorers and Mya Chmielewski added 14 in a reserve role. Grasso and Farmer each had 17 in the win and Farmer got credit for nine assists.

The Defenders held on to defeat Hastings on December 14 in Hastings 70-68. Dordt trailed 66-62 with 3:21 left in the game but scored eight in a row to take a four-point lead and then saw Hastings’ three-point shot at the buzzer miss the mark. Ben Gesink and Josh Van Lingen each had 13 points and Cade Bleeker added 12. Lipovsky led Hastings with 22 and Cale added 13.


The Dordt teams will be on the road to Yankton, South Dakota on Wednesday night, February 19 for a doubleheader that will conclude the men’s regular season. The Defender women will be at home to face the College of Saint Mary in a 3:00 start on February 22 to conclude the women’s regular season.
