Softball Plays Four This Weekend

Dordt is in Aberdeen, South Dakota to play four games on Friday and Saturday. The Defenders will play Valley City State and Dakota State on Friday at 10:00 AM and Noon respectively and will face Presentation and Dickinson State at 10:00 AM and Noon on Saturday.
Valley City State is playing in its season opener this weekend and posted a 54-5 record last season. The Vikings return Joelle Aiello and her .408 batting average with 25 runs batted in and 63 runs scored. Emily Smith batted .398 last season with 30 runs batted in and Jayme Mendard batted .353 with three homeruns. Smith also pitched 195 innings and posted a 33-1 record with a 1.18 earned run average and struck out 262 batters.
Dakota State is playing in its season opener and posted a 9-35 record last season. The Lady Ts return Nicole Stewart with a .436 batting average and she had four homeruns. Xitlali Lopez had a .364 batting average last season and a team high seven homeruns. Lopez also had a 6-12 pitching record and a 4.59 earned run average.
Dickinson State was 27-24 last season and their top returning batter is Jaya Allen with a .320 batting average and Rhea Paiva batted .306. Allen had eight homeruns and 39 runs batted in. Allen had a 12-16 record last season with a 3.04 earned run average and struck out 190 batters in 196 innings pitched.
Presentation is 0-2 after play Thursday. Darrian Gibson and Jadwyn Parrish each had two singles in the doubleheader with Bibiana Villeda and Yulissa Pena each going 0-1 on the mound. Pena struck out three in five innings and allowed 13 hits while Villeda struck out four in seven innings and allowed three runs.
The Defenders opened the 2020 season on Thursday and stand 2-0 this season.
The Defenders didn’t give up a run and secured a pair of shutouts in the doubleheader with Presentation.
Hailey Heeringa and Marissa Vanden Berg each had five hits and Hannah Sikkema knocked three singles and a homerun. Jessica OUles and Natalie Fopma both had three hits and four different players had a double each.
Fopma and Abby Kraemer each had pitching wins with Fopma scattering eight hits in a 3-0 win while Kraemer secured a three-hit shutout in five innings in a shortened 10-0 win.
Dordt swept Presentation on Thursday night 3-0 and 10-0.
Valley City State beat Dordt last season 8-0 on February 15 with singles by Oules and Carley De Roin. Smith was the pitcher for the Vikings and threw three and a third innings of two-hit softball and struck out seven.
Dickinson State beat Dordt on February 15 4-0 with Natalie Fopma getting Dordt’s lone hit. Tianna Soodsma scattered 11 hits with three earned runs allowed and struck out three while absorbing that loss.
Dordt and Dakota State haven’t played since 2016 when the Defenders swept a pair of doubleheaders .
Dordt resumes play on Friday, February 28 against MidAmerica Nazarene and will face Park on Saturday, February 29 before traveling to Arizona for games beginning March 7.
