Dordt University senior Megan Middel will be presenting her art exhibit titled “Untold Stories Across the World,”  in Dordt’s Art Gallery in the Campus Center from February 17-21. A reception for the gallery will be on Thursday, February 20, from 7-8 p.m.

“Untold Stories Across the World” is an exhibit that expresses awareness of perspective, privilege, and healing. Through an inspiring trip to Uganda, Megan Middel was inspired to develop an artistic series based on the children she met in Africa.

“Each of these children I photographed are smiling, but there is pain behind those eyes, although many if not most choose joy,” says Middel. “The joy of a second chance and the joy in relationships. Art is not merely meant to be hung on walls. Art is reflective, therapeutic, hopeful and meaningful.”

Through this process, Megan recognizes the power art has to reveal the broken, and most importantly, highlight a hopeful future.

“What I have appreciated about the art department at Dordt, is the professors really push you to go beyond and think outside of the box,” Middel says. “Teaching me to go outside my comfort zone and think about the various meanings and techniques of art has taught me to be a more versatile and skillful artist. In addition, art is not simply a delicately detailed landscape, there are many forms and shapes it can come in and still be appreciated for.”

The community is welcome to visit the free exhibit, which is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
