(Wednesday, February 5; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference and Hauff Mid-America Sports have announced the men’s indoor track & field athletes-of-the-week for events held January 27-February 2 and Dordt’s Jacob Vander Plaats (Junior; Sioux Center, Iowa) has earned the honor.
Vander Plaats claims the track portion of the award for his performance at the Dennis Young Invite in Storm Lake, Iowa where he set a new meet record in the mile with a time of 4:16.79. His automatic qualifying mark was over seconds ahead of second place and is his second automatic qualifying mark this season. His time ranks 3rd in the NAIA and 1st in the GPAC and he has also qualified in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:53.45.
“Jacob is having a tremendous season. He has stayed healthy long enough to really develop as a runner this year. He had a great cross country season and has transitioned seamlessly into track and field training and competing at a high level. Every time he races we look forward to seeing what he will do. He is a very talented runner, and it is satisfying to see him develop those abilities so effectively,” said Dordt track and field coach Craig Heynen.
Dordt continues its season on Saturday, February 8 at a meet hosted by the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota.
