Volleyball Plays Two Saturday


Dordt will travel to La Crosse, Wisconsin on Saturday, January 25 for a triangular with Viterbo and St. Norbert.  The matches mark the opening of the 2020 season for the Defenders against Viterbo and St. Norbert. The day starts with a 3:00 match against St. Norbert and concludes with a 5:00 match against Viterbo.


Viterbo was 3-19 last season and 0-12 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Last year’s team was led by Jacob Nonn with a 3.39 kills per set average and Chris Kahler was good for 3.32 kills per outing. Andrew Lepage put up 7.29 assists per outing and had 13 ace serves while Nonn had 14 aces and Kahler 15. 

The VHawks averaged 8.8 kills per set as a team and allowed 11.48 kills and teams had a .288 kill efficiency against them.

St. Norbert is 1-2 this season with a win over Saint Vincent and losses to Wittenberg and Hiram.  St. Norbert is a NCAA Division III team. Josh Hauke is averaging 2.55 kills per set and Jake Bettag is good for 1.09 kills per set with a .276 kill efficiency. St. Norbert has 10 service errors through three matches and has allowed 24.


The Defenders were 5-16 last season and had a conference win over Lindenwood-Belleville. Dordt’s other wins were over Maranatha Baptist, Culver Stockton and Viterbo (twice).

Dordt’s top returning attacker is Garret Vander Zee with a 2.86 average and Shavon Barker averaged right at one kill per set. Tyler Postma is back and averaged 6.46 assists per set last year. Vander Zee put in 21 ace serves and averaged 1.75 digs per outing and Levi Ewald had 1.26 digs.

The Defenders averaged 9.68 kills per set while allowing 12.95 and averaged 1.86 points per set on blocks. The Defenders had 64 ace serves while allowing 94.


Dordt and Viterbo played three times last season with Dordt prevailing twice. Dordt won a February 9 match up in La Crosse 25-11, 25-14, 25-21 last season with Ben Tiemersma recording 10 kills and Tyler Postma put up 19 assists. Nonn and Kahler had eight and seven kills respectively for Viterbo.

The teams played again on March 16 again in La Crosse and Viterbo won in five. Dordt forced the fifth set with a pair of 25-23, 25-22 wins in sets three and four.  Viterbo won the contest 15-11. Tiemersma had 25 kills and Vander Zee 20 for Dordt with 39 assists by Austin Clark. Nonn had 31 kills for the VHawks in the win and Kahler added 16.

Dordt didn’t need to wait long to avenge the loss and beat Viterbo 3-0 on March 20 in Sioux Center. Vander Zee had 12 kills and Shavon Barker and Tiemersma had six each. Postma put up 21 assists and Austen Scammon got to 14 digs.  Kahler put down 13 kills for the VHawks in the loss.

This is the first time Dordt and St. Norbert are meeting in men’s volleyball.


The Defenders will host William Penn on January 31 before hosting a tri-angular against Jamestown and Viterbo on Saturday, February 1.
