Calkhoven To Join Defender Volleyball

(Tuesday, January 21; Sioux Center, Iowa)  Jamaica Calkhoven, a senior at Sioux Falls Christian (South Dakota), has announced her intention to attend Dordt and join the volleyball program.

Calkhoven is a 5-3 libero who had 311 digs this season for the Chargers and she had 33 ace serves.  Calkhoven served for 91.9 percent success this season as Sioux Falls Christian won its third straight conference and  state championship. Calkhoven accounted for 339 digs as  a junior and had 27 ace serves.

"A major reason why I chose to commit to Dordt University is because I felt God leading me here. Between the high academics and great volleyball program, I knew this is where I was called to attend. Having been blessed with the opportunity to receive a Christian education growing up I desired a college campus and volleyball program that puts Christ first. I believe Dordt University will challenge and prepare me to impact the world for Christ," said Calkhoven.

She earned all-state honorable mention honors this season while also getting all-conference honors and academic all-state accolades.  Calkhoven was also selected to compete in the South Dakota Volleyball Coaches Association All-Star Match held in December.

“Jamaica first attended our grade school volleyball camp many years ago and she told me that she would someday play for Dordt volleyball.  For many years, we kept watching her on-court skills develop and we are so pleased with the complete player and person that she has become.  She has played high level high school volleyball under coach Darci Wassenaar as well as national club experience through Kairos.  Jamaica understands what it takes to be successful at each level.  We are thrilled that she has once again chosen to join our program.  She is a great fit for our campus and community as she seeks to not only grow in her volleyball skills, but also her faith walk with Christ, and in all other areas of her life," said Dordt coach Chad Hanson.

Jamaica is the daughter of Jim and Jan Calkhoven of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She plans to study Business at Dordt.

Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa, is a comprehensive Christian university rooted in the Reformed tradition. The Defender athletic program is a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).
