Open Space Park Softball Field Recognized As Field of the Year

(Wednesday, November 27; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) has unveiled its 2019 Field of the Year winners and Open Space Park in Sioux Center, Iowa has won the Schools and Parks Softball award. Open Space Park serves as the home field for the Dordt Defender softball program.

Each year STMA presents the industry’s highest honors to members who manage baseball, softball, soccer, softball and other sporting playing surfaces at the professional, collegiate, schools and parks and recreation levels.

“Each of these natural grass facilities embody the level of excellence that sports field managers around the country strive for every day,” says Kim Hick, CEO of STMA. “The competition in this program (softball) was very strong and your entry is definitely deserving of this honor.”

A panel of 12 judges independently scored entries based on playability, appearance, utilization of innovative solutions, effective use of budget and implementation of a comprehensive agronomic program.

“With the efforts of being an environmentally responsible management complex and other efforts to provide a safe, quality playing surface, this is the second field in history to receive such an honor in the state of Iowa,” stated Lee Van Meeteren, Sioux Center Parks Director, in the announcement of this award. “This is an award for the City, Dordt University and the Sioux Center Schools.  Being a part of joint use for this community provides us the ability to have these types of facilities.”
