Briar Cliff is 5-4 this season and 4-3 in the GPAC with losses this year to Waldorf (17-10), Concordia (16-14), Morningside (49-14) and Northwestern (38-7). Three of Briar Cliff’s wins have been by 10 points or less.  Briar Cliff has been on the road just three times this season.

Briar Cliff is rushing for 117 yards per game as a team and passing for 154.  The Chargers allow 98 yards per game on the ground and 165 yards passing.   Briar Cliff is outscoring teams 19-16.

Jonathan Santos is 85-146 passing for 936 yards and five touchdowns with five interceptions. Preston Mulligan is 40-85 passing for three touchdowns and four interceptions.

Rashad Brown has 29 catches for an 8.7 yards per catch average and three touchdowns. Khamren Davenport has 27 catches for 11.5 yards per catch and two scores. Kobe Johnson and Tyler French have 18 and 15 catches each with French getting 19.5 yards per catch.

Jordan Williams leads the Chargers on the ground with 454 yards and a 6.8 yards per carry average with three touchdowns. Greg Henry has 420 yards on the ground and he averages 3.6 yards per carry with five touchdown runs. Stanton Lee has three touchdown runs and has a 3.0 yards per carry average and 239 yards.

Robert Robinson leads the defense with 33 solo and 40 assisted tackles with 19 tackles for loss and nine sacks and one interception. Peyton Bailey has 28 solo and 35 assisted tackles and Alexander Johnson has 37 solo and 20 assisted tackles. Markel Roby has a team high three interceptions and Jovon Woods and Dante Shipman each have two interceptions.  The Chargers have 13 interceptions and 14 fumbles. Teams have forced 11 interceptions and eight fumbles against Briar Cliff.

Santos has punted 50 times and has a 34.8 average and Robinson has punted 10 times for a 34.6 average. Nick Manthana is 16-21 on point after tries and 3-5 on field goals with a long of 23. Taylor Harden is 2-2 on point after tries and 1-3 on field goals with a long of 26


Dordt is 6-3 this season with a 34-21 loss to Keiser (Florida) to open the season and a 30-9 win over Waldorf the following week. Dordt also faced defending NAIA National Champion Morningside and lost a 56-14 decision to the Mustangs before going on the road to Jamestown and earning a 41-6 win.  Dordt made it two wins in a row on September 28 with a 57-22 home win against Dakota Wesleyan.  After a bye week the Defenders were tripped up by Northwestern on October 12, 35-6.  The Defenders got back to their winning ways with a 61-0 win over Doane two weeks ago and followed that with a 35-0 win over Concordia on October 26.  Last week the Defenders established several school records in a 70-28 win over Hastings.

The Defenders have run for 355 yards per game and passed for 121 yards per outing.  Teams have gained 185 yards on the ground per game against Dordt and have passed for 164.   

Levi Schoonhoven has run for 896 yards on 143 carries and has a 6.3 yards per carry average with eight touchdowns.  Noah Clayberg has 799 yards on the ground and has a 7.7 yards per carry average. Carter Schiebout has a 6.0 yards per carry average and 481 yards rushing and Tyler Reynolds has 283 yards  and six touchdowns.

Reynolds has completed 17-29 passes with three touchdowns and Clayberg has completed 43-92 passes for five touchdowns and 651 yards. Jake Dodge has 15 catches for a 12.1 yards per catch average with two scores. Levi Jungling has 24 catches for a 15.0  yards per catch average and Ben Heuvelhorst has nine catches for 23.7 yards per catch while Lucas Warner and Levi Schoonhoven each have five and four catches respectively.

On defense Dordt is led by Josh Mrazek has 66 tackles with an interception and 10.5 tackles for loss. Elliott Van Kekerix has 41 tackles and Jalen Placide has 42 tackles and Nathan Kabongo 31.  Connor Bosma has 36 tackles with three interceptions. David Kacmarynski has been in on 41 tackles this season with 16.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. Placide is tied with Bosma for the team interception lead with three.

Brett Zachman is 37-44 on point after tries and 4-8 on field goals with a long of 36. Jake Dodge was handling the punting and has a 36.3 average on 21 attempts but he was injured against Concordia.  If Dodge can’t punt Noah Clayberg has five punts this season for a 52.6 average.


Morningside remains the no. 1 team in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll while Northwestern is no. 5.  Dordt is in the receiving votes category of the poll.


The Chargers faced Northwestern on Saturday in Sioux City and lost a 38-7 decision. Northwestern scored on drives of 65 and 43 yards in the first quarter and added drives of 83 and 50 yards in the second quarter for a commanding 24-0 halftime lead.  Briar Cliff allowed an 84 yard drive in the third quarter and then a turnover at their own goal line allowed a defensive score by Northwestern on a fumble recovery for a 38-0 lead.  Briar Cliff got on the board with a Jordan Williams 73 yard run with 4:22 left in the game.

The Chargers were outgained 378-277 and gained 188 yards on the ground and 89 in the air while surrendering 306 passing yards and 72 rushing yards.   Williams gained 117 yards on 14 carries but was limited to 44 yards on 13 carries before breaking off the long score. Mulligan was 5-9 passing for 55 yards and Collins-Jones was also 5-9 for 34 yards.   Brown caught five passes for 60 yards. Khamren Davenport had an interception for the Chargers and Alexander Johnson had the only quarterback sack of the game for Briar Cliff.

The Defenders beat Hastings on the road 70-28 last Saturday after getting up 49-14 at halftime.  Dordt had drives of 54, 8, 36, 75, 75, 40 and 84 yards in the first half and piled up 598 yards on the ground and 733 total yards of offense. Clayberg had 208 yards rushing to lead Dordt on 18 attempts and had a run of 75 yards. Schiebout had 106 yards on 10 carries and Schoonhoven had 98 yards on the ground on 20 carries. Michael Sonderman accounted for 82 yards on the ground and Levi Jungling caught six passes for 114 yards and Clayberge completed 8-12 passes for 135 yards. Mrazek and Placide had eight tackles each with Mrazek getting a pair for loss and Brayton Van Kekerix had six tackles and Sam Warner four.


The Defenders and Chargers have played some tight games over the course of their series and last year’s game was decided in overtime with Dordt prevailing 36-30.   Dordt’s defense made a stop on fourth and goal from the one on Briar Cliff’s possession and Levi Jungling scored the game winner on Dordt’s fifth play from scrimmage in the overtime.

Briar Cliff outgained Dordt on the ground 338-260 but Dordt had a 259-168 yards passing advantage. 

Noah Ylagen ran for 199 yards on 32 carries while Dordt got 130 yards from Keithen Drury and 109 by Levi Schoonhoven.  Jacob Diaz passed for 168 yards for the Chargers and Brock Lamle had 259 yards passing on 17-27 attempts. Jungling caught nine passes for 159 yards and Dodge had six for 59. Elijah Brown caught four passes for 97 yards.   Jalen Placide and Casey Byker each had one interception.


The regular season ends for  both teams next week with Dordt hosting Midland and Briar Cliff will travel to Jamestown.
