Dordt ranked top university in Iowa by U.S. News and World Report

Dordt named to several lists, including "Most Innovative Schools" and "Best Value Schools"

Dordt University is the top-ranked university in Iowa and the third best regional college in the Midwest, according to the 2020 U.S. News and World Report rankings.

“I hope that our faculty, staff, students, and supporters are encouraged by this positive news from the U.S. News and World Report college rankings—since those folks are the reason for this recognition,” says Dordt University President Erik Hoekstra. “While it’s heartening to see how we measure up on these markers, my greatest joy is seeing the outcome of the quality education that we offer—specifically the changed lives of our students as they become disciples of Jesus and are equipped to be effective citizens of Christ’s kingdom in every area of life.”

Tied for second place on the “Most Innovative Schools in the Midwest” list, Dordt has made innovative improvements when it comes to program options, campus life, technology, and facilities. For example, Dordt’s recently-constructed Carl and Gloria Zylstra Nursing Education Center provides state-of-the-art labs and equipment that offer students hands-on learning experiences in a safe environment. Also, Dordt’s Pro-Tech Program, offering two-year degrees in manufacturing technology and farm operations and management, is among the first in the nation to provide a skills-based education with a Christian worldview.

This year, Dordt tied for second place on the “Best Undergraduate Teaching” list. This is another ranking that highlights how Dordt faculty are committed to teaching students well; according to The Wall Street Journal / Times Higher Education 2020 rankings, Dordt has been ranked number one in student engagement four years in a row. The Wall Street Journal / Times Higher Education rankings say decades of research has found that the best way to truly understand teaching quality at an institution – how well it manages to inform, inspire and challenge students – is through capturing what is known as “student engagement."

Dordt is ranked 16th on the “Best Values Schools” list, which considers the institution’s academic quality and cost. At Dordt, 98 percent of students received more than $40 million in total financial aid, providing manageable options for students to invest in a Dordt education.

Dordt is ranked the best undergraduate-focused engineering program in Iowa according to the U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Engineering Program” list, which considers engineering schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Dordt engineering majors have earned a 91% pass rate on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam over the last 15 years; the average national pass rate of other engineering institutions is 76%.

Dr. Ethan Brue, an engineering professor at Dordt, says one benefit of Dordt’s engineering program is that faculty invest their time exclusively on the students’ undergraduate engineering learning experience. These faculty also bring extensive industry experience.

“In contrast to many universities, the Dordt engineering program has faculty who have served in industry for many years and who understand from their experience the complexity and breadth involved in design, consulting, and engineering leadership,” says Brue. “These faculty understand both the challenges and opportunities of serving with faithfulness and responsibility in the engineering world outside the academic context.”

U.S. News and World Report is one of the longest‑running college ranking publications.
