De Jong Commits To Defender Basketball

(Thursday, February 28; Sioux Center, Iowa) Derek De Jong, a senior at Blue Ridge Christian School (Missouri), has announced his intention to attend Dordt and join the Defender basketball program.
De Jong averaged 19.2 points, 1.2 assists, 5.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocked shots per game for Blue Ridge Christian. De Jong earned second-team all-state honors in 2016, 2017 and 2018 from the Missouri Christian School Athletic Association and he claimed first-team honors from the association in 2019. He was a part of a state champion team in 2015 and a state champion runner-up finish in 2019.
"We are really happy to have Derek in our program. He is a guard who will give us depth. He is a great fit for Dordt College on the floor and in the classroom," said Dordt basketball coach Brian Van Haaften.
Derek is the son of Gord and Barb De Jong of Lee's Summit, Missouri. He plans to study Engineering at Dordt.
Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, is a comprehensive Christian college rooted in the Reformed tradition. The Defender athletic program is a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).
U.S. News & World Report, Money Magazine, Forbes.com, Washington Monthly, and Princeton Review all list Dordt on their best colleges lists. Dordt is home to approximately 1,500 students.
