(Thursday, February 28; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference post-season women’s basketball honors have been announced and Dordt’s Bill Harmsen has been voted the conference’s coach of the year in voting done by the 12 coaches in the league.
Harmsen guided the Defenders to a 20-10 regular season mark and a 13-9 league record. The 20-win season is the first in the program’s history and is the most since the Defenders were 19-13 in 2009-10.
“We are grateful for the work Coach Harmsen has done in bringing the women’s basketball program forward. Not only has the team performed well on the court this season, but to see them grow in all facets of their lives is especially encouraging. Coach Harmsen embraces the our holistic Defender Way approach to Christian athletics. As an athletic department and campus community, we congratulate him on this honor,” said Dordt Athletic Director Ross Douma.
The Defenders finished fourth in the league which is also the best finish for the women’s basketball program since the league was formed in 2000-01.
This year’s team has established several records including: wins, most points scored, points per game average, field goals made, field goals attempted, three-point field goals made, three-point field goals attempted, total defensive rebounds and rebounds per game.
The 2018-19 season was the first for Harmsen at Dordt after several seasons at Western Christian in Hull, Iowa where he guided the girls to state titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and the boys to a 2017 state title.
