TeBrake and Van Surksum Student Recital

Community Invited to Student Recital on October 26

The community is invited to the joint recital of Dordt College seniors Kourtney TeBrake, soprano, and Karissa Van Surksum, trumpet. The free recital will be held on Friday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A public reception will follow.

TeBrake, of Raymond, Minnesota, will be accompanied by junior Retasya Badudu of Jakarta, Indonesia, and will be joined by senior Bethany Van Eps of East Grand Forks, Minnesota as well as junior Benjamin Bouwkamp of Pella, Iowa, for a vocal trio and a duet. Highlights include Spanish songs by Miguel Sandoval, a set of pieces of John Duke, and the “Papageno, Papagena” duet from Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Van Surksum, of Harrisburg, South Dakota, will be accompanied by her mother, Kimberly Van Surksum, and by Amy Linder. She will be joined by a brass quintet and a jazz ensemble of Dordt students. Highlights include White Rose Elegy, a piece written for brass quintet and the classic trumpet solo Concerto for Trumpet in B-Flat by Alexander Arutunian.

TeBrake is majoring in K-12 choral music education and studies voice with Debora Vogel. In 2015-2018, TeBrake participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) vocal competition and was selected to perform at the 2017 Dordt College Scholarship Banquet. 

Van Surksum is majoring in history secondary education with a minor in performance and pedagogy and studies trumpet with Kevin Linder. She participated in the Iowa Collegiate Honor Band in 2016 and 2017.
