(Thursday, September 13; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Great Plains Athletic Conference and Hauff Mid-America Sports have announced the following Cross Country Runners-of-the-Week for September 3-9. Dordt College’s Eric Steiger (Freshman; Lynden, Washington) claimed the honor.
Steiger won his first collegiate cross country race, the Defender Holiday Inn Express Classic, in a photo finish with teammate a Jacob Vander Plaats. He was 18 seconds in front of the third-place finisher and led seven teammates that finished in the top-10 with a spread of 55 seconds.
“Earning this recognition is a special way for Eric to begin his college career. He ran incredibly well for his first collegiate race and 8-K. His race was a combination of fantastic individual effort along with strong pack running as he was supported early in the race, running with Anthony Ghiorso and Davis Tebben, and later in the race working with Jacob Vander Plaats. It is a great way to start the cross country season,” said Dordt College coach Nate Wolf.
The Defenders are off until Saturday, September 22 when they run at the Dean White Invite hosted by Doane College in Crete, Nebraska.
