Basketball Hosts GPAC Games Saturday


Dordt will host a pair of GPAC games on Saturday, January 13.  The women will face the College of Saint Mary from Omaha, Nebraska at 2:00 with the men facing Briar Cliff beginning at 4:00. The College of Saint Mary Flames are 2-16 this season and 1-9 in league play.  The wins of the Flames came over Doane (58-57 ot) and Mount Mercy (84-71) and came in the span of 10 days. The Flames lost ten games in a row to start the season and are currently on a five game slide.

Miranda Acuna is averaging 15.2 points per game and has converted a team high 33 three-point baskets and has enjoyed 30 percent success.  Acuna is a team best 74-84 from the free throw line. Corryne Millet and A’leah Davis are averaging 6.2 and 6.1 points per game respectively. Lacey Knudsen leads the Flames’ rebounding effort with a 5.6 average while Alyssa Laudato tops the team with nearly three assists per game. Tyler Sumpter is averaging 15.4 points per game and has played in eight games and she did not play from November 7-December 16. Sumpter has averaged 16 points in the three games since her return.

The College of Saint Mary has converted 35.2 field goal attempts this season and 27.2 percent of their three-point shots.  Teams are converting 43.5 percent of the field goals they attempt. Teams are also outrebounding the Flames 44.1-35.1.

The Briar Cliff men are 18-2 overall and 7-1 in league play.  The losses for Briar Cliff are to Dakota State (90-83) and Midland (103-94). The Chargers won sven games in a row to start the season and are currently on a seven game winning streak as well.

Briar Cliff has outscored teams 91.8 to 78.6 and have converted 50.2 percent of its field goals while allowing 48.3 percent success. Slightly more than 50 percent of Briar Cliff’s field goal attempts have been three-point shots and the Chargers are making 39.8 percent of those shots.  Briar Cliff has a slight 33.6-33.3 rebounding advantage and force 15.5 turnovers per game while giving it up 11 times per game.

Erich Erdman has a 20.5 points per game average and has a team high 4.5 assists per game average. Jay Wolfe has averaged 19.4 points per game and is 60-120 from three-point range. Jackson Lamb has a 15.9 scoring average and leads the team with 65 made three-point shots. Wolfe is the leading rebounder with a 7.3 average. Blake Wiltgen adds 9.1 points per game and has a 60.8 field goal percentage.


Dordt is 8-11 this season and 3-7 in women’s basketball with GPAC wins over Mount Marty, the College of Saint Mary and Doane.

The Defenders are led by Rachel Evavold’s 14.9 points per game and she hauls down 7.4 rebounds per game while converting 54 percent of her field goals. Annie Rhinesmith adds 13.1 points per game with 3.8 rebounds and over four assists per game. Erika Feenstra has a 11.1 points per game average to go with 5.0 rebounds. Payton Harmsen knocks down 6.9 points per game. Kenzie Bousema averages 6.5 points per game and gets to 4.8 rebounds. Ebby Prewitt and Siennah Stamness score 6.3 and 6.1 points per game respectively.

Dordt scores 68.1 points per game and allow 74.3 points per contest.  Dordt has outrebounded teams 38.4-36.3 and is converting 40.4 percent of its field goals.

The Dordt men are 9-11 overall and 3-5 in league play with wins over Dakota Wesleyan, Mount Marty and Midland and losses to Concordia, Northwestern, Doane, Morningside and Hastings in league action. Dordt’s longest winning streak is two and its longest losing streak is three.

Dordt scores 90.1 points per game and allows 81.4 points per outing.  The Defenders have outrebounded teams 35.5-32.6 and convert 48 percent of their field goals while surrendering 49 percent shooting. Dordt is converting 38.7 percent of its three-point shots.

Alec Henrickson has scored an average of 13.8 points per game and Marcus Winterfeld is adding 12.6 points per game while making 50.5 percent of his field goals. Jesse Jansma adds 8.9 points per game and Kyle Lang adds 8.5 points and Chad Barkema is at 8.2 points per outing.  Chandler Brunsting is adding 8.0 points per game and is at 2.3 assists per game and Lang is at 2.2. Winterfeld, Lang, Barkema and Brunsting all are converting 50 percent or better on field goal attempts.


Midland beat the College of Saint Mary 84-79 on Wednesday night.  The Flames were down 23-13 at the end of the first half and 39-35 at halftime.  Midland put the game away with a 29-18 third quarter advantage. Acuna had 29 points and was 4-6 from the three-point line and had six rebounds with two assists and three steals. Tyler Sumpter came off the bench and scored 21 points.

The Dordt women lost to Morningside 66-59 this week. Dordt had a brief one point lead late in the game but Morningside responded with a six point run and put the game away. Rachel Evavold had 16 points and 14 rebounds and Erika Feenstra scored 14.

Briar Cliff beat Concordia 78-65 in Seward on Wednesday night. Erdman had 21 points and Wolfe had 16 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Briar Cliff was up 38-35 at halftime.

The Defender men lost 90-77 to Morningside on Wednesday night.  A 15-0 run by the Mustangs swung the game to their favor midway through the second half. Winterfeld had 20 points and ten rebounds and O’Donnell had 14 points with Ben Gesink had 13 points.


Dordt went to Omaha and won a 74-69 contest on November 21.  The Defenders led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter and 37-34 at halftime.  Dordt was never able to shake the Flames and held a 54-52 lead at the end of the third quarter. Baylee Tetzlaff scored 14 in the win and Rachel Evavold had 13 points and six rebounds. Kenzie Bousema came off the bench to score 13 and had four rebounds.  The Flames got 32 from Acuna and she grabbed five rebounds.

The Chargers beat Dordt three times last season.  On November 22 the Defenders lost at home 98-85 with Erdman scoring 26 and Bryan Forbes had 22.  Dordt was paced in that loss by Henrickson with 19. On February 1 the Defenders went to Sioux City and lost 96-74.  Alex Terpstra came off the bench to score 22 in the loss and Forbes had 25. Briar Cliff then opened post-season play on February 22 with a 96-79 win in Sioux City. Henrickson had 17 points for the Defenders while Erdman and Forbes each had 17.


The women’s top-25 poll was released on January 9. GPAC members Concordia (1), Dakota Wesleyan (8), Hastings (11), Morningside (12) and Northwestern (14) are all in the top-20. Future member Jamestown is no. 6.

Cornerstone is the men’s no. 1 team while four GPAC teams are in the top-20.  Briar Cliff (4), Morningside (9), Northwestern (10) and Dakota Wesleyan (19)  are in the polling and Concordia and future member Jamestown are both in the receiving votes category of the poll.

The next poll will be released on January 23.


The Defenders are at home on January 17 to face Dakota Wesleyan and will travel to Concordia on Saturday, January 20
