Sioux Center, Iowa: Dordt will host its annual Day of Encouragement on Saturday, February 3, 2018. This one-day conference provides fellowship and a series of workshops, designed to encourage and equip all members of the church body. Whether pastors, musicians, deacons, students, or parents, all are welcome and invited to attend.
The plenary speaker for this year is Dr. Reginald Smith. Smith serves as the Director of Race Relations and Social Justice for the Christian Reformed Church in North America, advising churches and organizations on cross-cultural and urban ministry. He grew up on the west side of Chicago, and received his M. Div. from Calvin Theological Seminary and his D. Min. from Western Theological Seminary. For 20 years, he led Roosevelt Park Community CRC in Grand Rapids, helping the church as it transformed from mostly Dutch-American into a multi-cultural community church. He has taught urban ministry and urban development courses at Calvin, Western, and Grand Rapids seminaries, and he also has extensive writing and speaking experience. His morning keynote address is titled “Lessons of Joys and Pains in a Multi-Cultural Neighborhood.” The afternoon address is “Encouragement for the Journey: Stories of Hope.”
Breakout sessions are divided into six categories: Family, Worship, Youth, Tech Media, Preaching/Teaching, and Shepherding. Session topics include foster parenting, child abuse in the church, organ vs. chord charts, engaging youth in a digital world, church website design, ministry in gritty situations, the work of neighboring, and much more. Among the breakout session speakers are writer and Dordt alumna Kendra Broekhuis (the recipient of Dordt’s new Horizon award), Scott Hoeze, Director of the Center for Excellence in Preaching at Calvin Seminary, and Syd Hielema from Faith Formations.
Tickets for the conference are $55 for an individual (price applies until January 26), $45 for groups of $10 or more, and $15 for students. Lunch is included.
