Dordt College announced in December that the college’s emphasis offered in Human Resource (HR) Management fully aligns with the curriculum guidebook of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
“This means that senior HR students at Dordt can apply to sit for the SHRM-Certified Professional (CP) exam when they have 500 hours of experience,” said Dr. Brian Hoekstra, professor of business administration at Dordt. “This is compared to the one year of post-graduation experience regularly required by SHRM.”
According to the SHRM website, receiving the SHRM-CP credential “makes you a recognized expert and leader in the HR field” and “sets you apart from your colleagues, proving your high level of knowledge and skills.” They also state that “more than 5,000 employers are seeking SHRM credential-holders every month,” which can mean increased opportunities for advancement.
SHRM created the guidelines in 2006, housed in the HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates, which defines the content HR students should be studying at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Dordt is one of 469 programs in higher education considered to be in alignment with the SHRM guidelines.
