Sioux Center, Iowa: The community is invited to the joint recital of Dordt College seniors Rebecca Nelson of Ventura, Iowa, and Sion Yang of Seoul, South Korea. The free recital will be held on Saturday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. A public reception will follow.
Nelson will perform both percussion and vocal pieces, featuring a 4-mallet marimba solo “The Snow is Dancing” from Debussy’s Children’s Corner, and Bernstein’s “I Hate Music,” part of a 2-song cycle from the point of view of a 10-year-old girl. Dordt College piano instructor Norma Snyder Jones will accompany Nelson on her vocal pieces.
Yang will perform on flute. Highlights include “Arirang” by Gary Schocker, an arrangement of a traditional Korean folk song that Yang heard growing up, and “The Wind Forest” by Joe Hisaishi. “The Wind Forest” is a song from Yang’s favorite movie My Neighbor Totoro, which she arranged for flute as a project for a music class. Yang will be accompanied by Dordt College vocal instructor Pamela De Haan and will be joined by Dordt College senior Jenna Veenstra of Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a flute duet.
Nelson is majoring in K-12 choral/instrumental music education, and she studies voice with Pamela De Haan and percussion with Jason Domonkos. Earlier this year Nelson placed 3rd in the Upper Women’s Division of the regional National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) vocal competition. She will participate in the Iowa Collegiate Honor Band on November 18.
Yang is majoring in K-12 instrumental music education and studies flute with Stephanie Kocher. She serves as an accompanist for the Dordt College Music Department and is the concert band flute section leader. She participated in the Iowa Collegiate Honor Band in 2015 and 2016 and was selected for the band this year as well.
